The great jazz trumpeter Clifford Brown has been my hero since I was 9. This is the only known video of him playing. Recorded in Feb, 1956, at age 25, 5 months before he died in car crash.

Though the show was on the air 1953-1959, and many jazz artists made appearances, Miles Davis appeared 6 times, none of the live performances were recorded except for three. Only this one has ever surfaced, because Soupy Sales himself rediscovered this kinescope video recording in his garage in mid 1990s.

Sarah Vaughan has a great voice, broken hearted melody, she shines.

Renee Fleming etc.

Billy Cobham has been my favorite drummer for more than 40 years now, and is responsible for helping to usher in a huge change in the role of the drum kit.

Shabazz was the first album I ever purchased. Played the hell out of it and have it burned into my brain. The album was lost long ago and I hadn't heard it in decades...

...Until I stumble across this video, which is a vid of the actual concert that the LP was made from!  I had no idea that a video existed, and having lost the album had thought that I'd never hear this again. So to find a video of my long=lost first album of the most important musician in my life - well, I was excited, anyway.

(Maybe Bob M my fellow fusion-head might like this - some cool early synth stuff)

Wow, that's awesome Mike! I can't imagine getting to see on video some of the great albums that I grew up with.

I first learned about Cobham while at college. Lots of young drummers there worshiped him as the best ever. I was impressed by his impressive physique. My drummer loved him and also had huge guns.

Yes, in spades Rich. I am amazed how young prodigies are coming forth. Laura Betran (13), Jackie Evancho (10), Amira (9), Beau Dermott (12), Anna McLuckie (17?), Sal Valentinetti (20) are all simply superb and recorded well.

The recording quality is so good, even through YouTube, that I hope will help one adjust their systems.

Anna. I should add where Anna is located, the music is so spacious, amazingly open, and the second verse was evently adjusted as there is more ambience, "echo", space "around" her voice. Difficult to express, but amazing.

Three Bach compositions I love:

First is from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1, Prelude and Fugue in C# Minor, BWV 849. Especially the Fugue. 1722!

Another one is Double Harpsichord Concerto in C major BWV 1061, 3rd movement, again a Fugue. Trevor Pinnock. Like mfsoa's Cobham recording, I lost this one for 30 years. I originally heard it on the radio, just once around 1986, but it changed my outlook on classical music, got me into Bach, which had a huge influence on me. I couldn't find the CD, didn't know what to look for, so many harpsichord pieces by Bach and Pinnock did them all. Finally heard it on the radio again last month. Wow, same effect.

Last one is another fugue, the 2nd movement from Solo Violin Sonata, BWV 1001. This is Julia Fisher playing. Pretty radical key changes and harmonic tension for 1720, Bach was 35 yo, she was 22.

Rich, I especially like the violin and harpsichord selections. Very nice. The violin player is someone I have not heard before. Wow, she is one talented lady.

Harpsichord, Simon and Garfunkel, Linda Ronstadt come to mind as well. Scarborough Fair (Full Version) Lyrics and Different drummer.

Here are two of Bolero. Both are great for checking numerous instruments. The first has pretty good depth, spaciousness.

The second is even better spaciousness with great depth. The tonal may not be quite as good as the first. Have to judge for yourselves.

This third is a solo double bass, very spacious as it should be, and the tonal quality is simply stunning, similar to Anna's link in a previous post.
