Definitely 2 is better than 1. Also, the traditional placement method of sticking them in a corner is wrong, to my ears. Pull them away from the wall and get them up off the ground a bit. You will have to turn them up some, but they sound faster and cleaner that way.

Placement of them to deal with room modes is essential for great sound. You can't just park them and expect miracles. When properly deployed subs make music seem more effortless.
