Ok so I sold my speakers I had before and have started on some new ones. I purchased a receiver to use as a Pre/Pro its a Sony STR-DA3300ES. This is a temporary processor until Emotiva releases their new stuff. I also purchased an Emotiva XPA-3 amplifier. Let me tell you guys if your looking for a cheap yet amazing product go with Emotiva this amp is a beast, absolute beast. It weights about 70lbs and is huge and its only a 3 channel. The 5 channel version weights something like 85lbs. Anyways I've also started on new speakers. I'll post a few pictures of the cabinets I have designed with the help of a friend for the mains. The center and surrounds will probably be boring boxes though.

A friend of mine is actually building a kit out of these but he's sharing the info with me. His cabinets are not the same as mine though. Also here is the data for the center channel and surrounds.

There are also going to be 2 15" subs in the works more then likely. So yes a lot has changed :) Working on redoing my DAC too and eventually going to get a 2 channel or a 5 channel XPA series amp if I do 5 channel then my front 3 speakers will be Bi-Amped.
Looks like an ambitious project...good luck!
I've been eyeing some of the Emotiva stuff (XPA-5)...how is the sound quality of the XPA-3???
WELLL embarrassingly I have not listened to it yet as I am completely speakerless...BUT I have heard nothing but good things about the XPA series and Emotiva in general for that mater. And the way this thing is built I'd be surprised if it sounded bad :)
As for the speakers the curved cabinets are all being done CNC should be done by the 5th and ready to ship they told me so we'll see. The center and stuff will just remain square cabinets so easy stuff. Oh I'm also about to build a Flexi Rack for all my new stuff as my son can't keep his hands off with it in the TV stand and the new amp won't fit in the TV stand. I also got a new 80gb PS3 got tired of the Blu-Ray on HTPC thing it just wasn't working for me. Actually looks lots better on the PS3.
By the way the drivers used in the speakers are the Tangband W4-1337SA mids, Dayton RS180-s Woofers, and Vifa XT25 Double magnet for the tweeters. This is an MTMWWWW configuration even the center is. Should be an amazing design :)
Dougie085, You might want to take a hard look at the DX25TG05-04. It has the same motor structure as the XT25 with 21% greater dome area and 93.5 db sensitivity rating with the same electrical parameters.
It transitions better into the midrange because it moves more air and has a greater excursion capability than the XT25. Theoretically you should not have to pad down the midranges at all to match up with the tweeter as they would be within a half a db of one another at the crossover. See link http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=264-578.
Have fun with your project.

Dougie, who does your CNC work?
Your cabinet design looks cool.
Thanks
Rich
Well we're not using the DX25 I'm not sure if you read that wrong or what not. My friend ordered one of the new double magnet XT25's and measured it and liked it a lot. On the last set we developed we used the D26NC55 which was ok but the XT25 will be much better.
http://www.madisound.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=8402
Like I said this is all a kit my friend is developing and I'm just helping.
As for CNC work I post on a CNC forum from time to time and I just made a request for quote thing there in the appropriate place and got an awesome quote. Was like 196 for both of the cabinets all the parts. They should be done Tuesday I'll have to email them and see as I got the finalized side panels to him a little later but I told him that would happen before so hopefully everything is on time.
Dougie085,Apparently I can't type, the double magnet XT25 does look more desirable than the single magnet version,it is a closer match to the midranges in efficiency and the increased BL might give you a cleaner sound than the single magnet version. What crossover points will you have and what does system F3 look like it will be. Be sure to let us know how the finished speakers sound.
Scotty
F3 should be quite low I should have about 75L after bracing and driver displacement with 4 RS180's so I should be at an F3 somewhere in the mid to low 30's I believe. We just switched the drivers we were going to use because we were having a hard time getting a large qty of HiVi D6.8's in a timely manor. So I have yet to model the RS180's. Crossover points I can't remember exactly the tweeter will be something like 1.5-2khz though. We talked about it but I just can't remember now lol. He does all the crossover work as I'm an a novice at best when it comes to crossover design.
Also am quite undecided on veneer....unfortunately these mains are so large and I have 5 speakers to cover (including a huge center) so I can't have stuff thats too expensive. Right now the top contenders are Cherry and African Ribboned Mahogany.
Here's a pic of cherry
(http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j146/s7horton/tower.jpg)
Mahogany
(http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a76/JonPike/Modula%20MT%20gift/Picture225.jpg)
My speakers are done up in African ribbon mahogany with solid mahogany fronts. (http://www.audionervosa.com/gallery/297_24_10_07_11_28_08.jpg)
Mahaogany is one of the least expensive veneers you can use. If I had more money at the time I ordered my speakers I would have had them veneered in waterfall bubinga (http://www.wood-veneers.com/samples/veneer_extra/Bubinga_Waterfall_7082-78.JPG)
Scotty
Yeah that stuff is nice. Cherry is actually cheaper the Ribboned Mahogany though. If I had more money to spend it would be Birdseye Maple more then likely. Heck I may wait a while and still do that...but I'd rather veneer them before cutting out driver holes and what not and before I get them all together as its easier and if I put them together it will be a very long time before they come apart again :) I may do bamboo veneer though. I'd like to stain them with blue or red aniline dye.
Well here's my very latest project..literally just finished it for the most part a few minutes ago. I ran out of washers though so the very top panel isn't on yet. Where the PS3 is currently sitting will be a shelf for remotes/ controllers. There is room saved on the bottom for another power amp for my mains and the XPA-3 will get moved to center/surround duty. I bought some stain and will probably stain it although it looks great as is.
Nice looking rack, it reminds me of one that I built not too long ago:
http://www.audionervosa.com/index.php?topic=853.0
Yes yours is very nice as well :) I bought some Bombay Mahogany stain for mine but not sure when it will get put on as I have to tear apart the whole rack to do so...
I have found that just imagining what it would look like is a lot easier than actually doing the finishing work. Plus you have unlimited freedom to change your mind about how it 'should' look.

Anyways on another note I ordered some Blonde Bamboo Veneer for my speakers and some heatlock glue a veneer saw and a glue roller. They have blue tint to dye wood at veneersupplies.com but I'm not sure if that would be any worse or better then an aniline dye.
Ok so I've ordered the veneer (bamboo as mentioned) also a gallon of Heat Lock veneer glue and some Blue TransTint dye and other various little tools. I'm going to look into having an auto body shop do a nice clear coat on these so I don't have to worry to much about my son scratching them :) Just have to take a buffer to it and buff out any light scratches. Also I doubt I'd be able to achieve the same finish.
So I ordered the Bamboo veneer and then I ended up having more money then I thought... Now I'm thinking about either selling the bamboo or keeping it for another project and ordering 5 sheets of quilted maple. I really want the speakers to be very beautiful and I've always loved quilted maple. Its either quilted maple, heavy birdseye maple, or mappa burl.
A little update. I got the Bamboo veneer today and I think I may stick with it as its quite sexy looking. Also got part of the cabinet parts in. Pics

Well I noticed I screwed up the pictures in the last post when I moved them so they are fixed now.
In about 2 weeks or so (maybe 3) I'll be ordering all the rest of the parts for the center and 4 surrounds. I'll also be ordering an XPA-5 and an XPA-2 if I can't still swap out the XPA-3 for the XPA-5 then I'll sell it to a friend or something. Going to get 2 Maelstorm-X Sub drivers from DIYcable.com and a EP2500 amp with an FBQ2496EQ. This should complete my HT surround sound setup...To many projects. I'm going to have to buy a bunch of wood and just cut out everything I can in one day. Building the cabinets shouldn't take more then a few days but veneering and finishing will take quite a bit longer. The surrounds are just going to be painted black. The center and mains will be veneered. I'm not sure about the subs yet but I would like to veneer them.
Looking good. The veneer does look pretty sweet. I just can't do that kind of light color in my room. The wife puts up with a lot but that just wouldn't fly - good looking or not.
Bryan
Well thats not stained or anything. You could easily stain it cherry or dye it red, blue or just about any color you want.
Also the rest of the cabinet pieces shipped out today. They should be here wednesday/thursday. The drivers will be here tomorrow.
Hmmm. Didn't think bamboo took stain particularly well. Might have to reconsider.
Bryan
Bamboo doesn't take roundup too well either. Bamboo, kudzoo, poison ivy, bermuda grass, some of my favorites!
Still thinking of staining it blue?
Yeah I already have the stain. And I would think bamboo would take a stain/dye rather well its really not much of a hardwood. We'll see when I get to that point.
I've been considering buying a projector and what not a while and tonight I was figuring how I would configure this room. Well I came up with this and everything is not to scale. The screen is the white thing and the window on the upper wall would get blacked out. The screen would be audio transparent with the center channel behind it. The blue things are the speakers. The equipment would be in a closet now drawn in. The black thing is the projector and the brown thing under it is a fireplace. I think this would work ok until we buy a house and I can setup a dedicated room. Oh the tan box is a sub enclosure for 4 15" DIYcable Tempest-X's.

MMMMMM parts
(http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/Dougie085/P1010393.jpg)
Well THAT looks like fun! :D
Bryan
Yeah he said he plans to have the crossovers for the mains and center done by the 1st. So I should have crossover parts as well as parts for the center before too long. I can't wait starting to get anxious :D
(http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/Dougie085/Dynamic%204T/P1010401.jpg)
I did some sanding to get everything to fit together properly and then some dry fitting and what not. Hopefully this weekend I'll get both cabinets assembled and next week I'll start working on veneer.
I did another dry fit to see the size and what not next to my TV. They are quite big, I took a couple pictures.

That's quite a project you have...going ! Good luck with a smooth assembly and veneering :).
Yeah I'm more worried about veneering then the actual assembly lol.
They don't look out of scale though sitting next to that TV.
Should be sweet when you get them done.
Bryan
"My Pretty Pony" will sound AWESOME with those!
Looking good, Dougie!
Man everyone has commented on that lol. My son was watching cartoon network and it was some commercial that came on. I should have wait until something else was on the screen I suppose.
The matching center channel is almost as wide as these are tall and then they are like 9" tall I believe so a little taller then the towers are wide. So its going to be interesting looking lol. I think they would look quite a bit better with a projection screen but I'm going to be waiting a while for that as I may be purchasing a house and its a fixer so I'll be pretty busy for a while. Also I want to wait for the new Panny PT-AE3000 to come out :) 60,000:1 native CR sounds freaking awesome.

It won't be 60,000:1. It's going to come in closer to 3300:1 and will still use the D7 versus the D8 which is a bit of a disappointment.
http://cine4home.de/news/PanaAE3000/AE3000Preview.htm (http://cine4home.de/news/PanaAE3000/AE3000Preview.htm)
Well from the info I saw it didn't use an Auto-Iris and it used something similar to JVC's dark plate technology which is some sort of polarizer plate that sits on the LCD also they have extremely cut back on light leakage which is where a lot of the extra contrast ratio comes from. Regardless it supposed to be quite a bit better then the 1080UB which the RS1 I've been told is only a little better then the 1080UB so who knows. MSRP is supposed to be rather low on the AE3000U. What will the D8 offer that the D7 doesn't? And have any new projectors coming out said to be using the D8?
I'm not an expert on projectors by any stretch but from what I can tell the die hard projector guys are stating that the D8 panels offer up increased performance in almost every aspect and most seem to be confused as to why this new model, is using what amounts to last years technology. Unless I'm mistaken Epson owns the rights to the D8 so perhaps it's a case of them keeping it for their own stuff?
On the good side, it looks like this is going to hit the market for the same price as last years model which should mean the actual street price will be in and around the $2500.00 mark versus the $3500.00 suggested retail. If that turns out to be the case, I cant see a lot of other projectors touching it at that price point.
If I was looking for a projector, this thing would make my short list.
Yeah well I looked at the new JVC's that are coming out and they really aren't improving on anything just adding some features to some new models that are designed basically for installers. I haven't seen anything from Epson or what not. I think I tend to like LCD more but mostly probably because I haven't seen a DLP that I really enjoy. It will probably be middle to end of next year before I get a chance to purchase a projector anyways. Currently I'm looking to buy a fixer upper house and then dump probably 10 grand into wood working tools, put a new roof on the house (if I get the one I'm currently looking at) and then the fun starts from there. I will be ripping out plaster walls and putting in drywall rearranging the rooms opening up the kitchen and what not as well as custom building my own cabinets for the kitchen and other furniture. So right now a projector is way down the list of things I want and things I need :). I have my 50" RPTV for now anyways and I'm pretty happy with it. If I do get this house maybe I'll have a dedicated space to put a projector :D
You do realize that the JVC isn't DLP or LCD - right? It's DILA - A completely different story. I love it. MUCH smaller gaps between pixels for a much smoother image IMO.
Bryan
DILA is an LCD technology. I believe that Sony uses LCOS in their SXRD stuff. In fact DILA and LCOS are the same thing but either way its still an LCD system. I guess if anything you could say its a hybrid between LCD and DLP. It's still using liquid crystals but also does reflective like DLP.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_crystal_on_silicon
Quoting from wiki
"LCoS technology can produce much higher resolution images than liquid crystal display"
It is neither LCD nor DLP. DLP has moving mirrors. LCoS/DILA do not. LCoS/DILA hs a MUCH smaller gap between pixels than any pure LCD does. Yes, it is a crystal, but, it IS reflective like DLP (not transmissive like LCD) but nothing moves (like DLP), gaps are smaller, fill factor is higher, etc.
The beauty of this technology is that when a pixel is 'open' the light that would normally be reflected goes into a hole. It's not reflected into other areas of the PJ. The open pixels are also not hit with light from adjoining pixels.
When I went from a CRT (NEC XG Series) to a digital PJ, I looked around a long time to find something that gave me the close to the same black levels, the same color accuracy, and the same smooth, film-like picture. The Sony LCoS and the JVC DILA's were the only 2 that were even close IMO.
And don't be fooled by ridiculous contrast numbers. Most are rated full on to full off which is useless. They are also rated with everything cranked up full bore - not even close to being calibrated. If you look at a JVC/Sony calibrated vs. one of these newer low priced 'light cannons' properly calibrated, you'll actually get MORE light out of the JVC/Sony and better contrast/black levels.
That said, the piece you're looking at appears to be a great buy for the money. Not trying to knock it in any way. Just explaining the technical differences.
Bryan
Well then Sony is marketing their stuff wrong? They put SXRD which is an LCOS but it says 3 LCD all over it.
Then it's a misnomer. Definition of SXRD
SXRD (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) is Sony's proprietary variant of liquid crystal on silicon. LCoS is actually a licensed derivative of JVC's patented DILA (Digital Image Light Amplifier)
It's still reflective and is still LCoS - it just has one for each primary color instead of 1 for all 3 colors. This in theory will allow more overall light output. Technically, it is a liquid crystal - just a reflective one. Some marketing genius must have figured the general public knows the term LCD.
Bryan
Well I got some clamps from Harbor Freight today, they just put a local retail store in and I must say it's pretty awesome :) Last time I built a set of speakers I ordered this huge clamp set off ebay and spent 100 bucks on them and they were plastic and junk most didn't work and the ones that did didn't work for very long. I spent about 60 bucks on 5 aluminum channel clamps today and they are great quality. I got 1 60" and 4 24" clamps. Other prices I've seen on 60" bar or channel clamps is at least 40 bucks each. Granted these are still not top quality I don't feel as though they will fail any time soon if ever. I started something. I sanded the edges of the baffle to make them right and then glued it up and clamped it. So finally something on my speakers is getting done :)
Nice! What a cool building blog you have going on.
Those are some SERIOUS clamps.
Looking forward to the build process.
Bryan
Yes I like them a lot and they were cheap :D
Clamp-it, Jed!
?
Anyways getting a little bit more done here and there. I have to glue up one piece at a time right now as I'm laminating so pretty much have to use all the clamps for one piece. I'm hoping to have one cabinet done maybe end of next week though.

Clamp-it, Jed!
Sorry, probably should've gone with a photo on that one...
Well was a bit confused as the guy that is designing the crossover and what not of the speakers name is Jed :) Didn't think I had mentioned him here although I probably should have lol.
Another little update, close to finishing the first cabinet. Although the hard part is ahead which is wrapping the sides around.
Welll I just keep having issues with the sides on this thing... I can't seem to get them to go on right for anything. And then they start cracking. Thinking about ditching the curved cabinets at this point and just going for the traditional ones.
But the curved ones are coooooool!
Yeah but hardly worth all this hassle. We'll see but honestly right now I don't have high hopes for the curved ones. If they braces were designed differently bendy board would work perfect...but the way they are right now it would be hard.
Welllll I'm thinking about trying to make bendy wood or thin MDF work. Laminating several layers of course. I'm still unsure.....I would certainly love to keep these cabinets as I really want the curved and I've put quite a bit of work into them. So we'll see.
Would an industrial strength heat gun soften the binder glue in the mdf enough to do small sections without cracking?
Don't think so. The original side panels are pretty much done for. Either I'll build square boxes or I'll spend more time trying to make bendable mdf work. It would probably take me less time to build the new boxes lol.
Are you cutting slots into the stock to allow it to bend? Are you using 1/2" MDF? Gluiong and clamping might be tough, but you can glue one edge then bend after that dries to make it easier.
I would think multiple layers of 1/4" or 3/8" plywood with kerfs cut in the back every inch or less would allow very easy bending and forming. I have guys that use this kerfing method on 2x12's for rounded fronts of stages in Home Theaters all the time. Works like a charm - but it's a lot of work.
Bryan
Yeah I did the kerfs. I don't know the more I think about it the more I just want to start from scratch and do the traditional cabinets. I'm just not sure how I can modify it so that using multiple layers of the thin stuff to work. I could sand down the braces so they are the same as the top and bottom pieces but then I may have a problem with getting them all completely right. So then I'd be throwing more money at these cabinets (already 200 into them) and possibly not coming out right.
Hasn't Brian Bunge been making these curved-sided cabinets for a while? Is he around to give some advice? Haven't heard from him in a while...
-C
I don't know that he's been doing it a while lol. I think he's built one set? Not sure though and I don't think he's finished them either. I don't think his curve is as dramatic as mine.
Well I decided I'm going to grab some bendy board and find some way of making these cabinets I have work. I just have to see when I can get my friend to pick up the wood for me.
Well I got the spikes mounted and marked the braces to where I need to trim them to to work with the bendy board. Going to start assembling the second cabinet here soon and then trim both sets of braces get the holes in for the binding posts and spikes. Then get the sides on and after that its all down hill. Cut the holes for the drivers, bunch of sanding, and then veneering. Finish work and then everything goes together.
Hang in there. Lots of work and hassle but should be worth it when you're done.
Bryan
P.S. Some pics would be great...
I'll take some pics when I get the other cabinet clamped up. Not much has really changed from the last pics. I just drilled some holes for the spikes and marked the edges of the braces.
Some pics since you requested :) This is about all I've done that's new the last couple days. I paid for the crossovers and they will be here week or so probably. I have to pick up some wood for the sides still. Right now I have the baffle for the second tower gluing up then I need to glue up the top and bottoms and then I can assemble.

Well I've done as much as I can for now. The crossovers should probably be here end of the week beginning of next week. I still have to get some wood and stuff for the sides. Oh and I set the ports on the back to show where they are going. All 3 will go up towards the top so they aren't anywhere near the back of the drivers.

I think those are going to be sharp.
You can see the lines drawn on the braces there, that's how much material has to be removed for the new way that the sides will go on. Hopefully I can keep it even as I sand.
Lookin good Doug!
You've got to clean that room, Dougie. ;)
Yeah since I finished assembling the cabinets its been started lol. Got rid of a bunch of trash yesterday. It's been my little workshop area for a few weeks. Eventually it will be messy again probably while I veneer the cabinets.
Well crossovers will be here Monday. I've got a little audio get together with some friends on Saturday. I'm going to try and work out when I can get some help getting the wood here shortly. So I'm hoping in another week or two I can get these completed at least to a point of listening. Veneer will probably be longer. I probably shouldn't put the drivers and stuff in until I veneer them as its going to be real freaking hard to break them down for veneering.
Looks like things are coming right along. Looking forward to the next installment.
Bryan
I went by HD yesterday. I was looking for like thin MDF but all I could find was some sort of 1/8" thick tile board which had a smooth white side and then a brown particle board side. There was also this Tempered Hardboard that was 1/8" thick. I was hoping to find something 1/4" thick so I only had to do 3 layers. I guess the hardboard stuff would work although the back of it has some sort of texture on it but I guess that might help the glue hold it better.
That tempered hardboard should be good in glued layers. It is hard, so it's resonant freq would be fairly high, but the layers or glue will damp it well. I think HD version is eucaboard made in brazil, made from eucalyptus.
Yeah I'm pretty sure that's what I'm going to end up having to use. My friend is going to go pick some of it up for me this week.
Well I haven't updated you guys in a while so here's a few pictures.

I think that must be the all time record for "tallest post."
Yes it is bamboo and thanks for the comments! The bamboo is a real pain to trim though as it likes to just split and splinter at random. So the edges aren't completely perfect. Oh well I guess? I think after finishing it won't be super noticeable as I'm going with a nice deep blue aniline dye so the darker area's will look almost black and it should blend in rather well.
Hey, you went with the curves, they turned out great! Nice work man. I think people are usually their own worst critics. I doubt anyone will ever notice the imperfections you see.
Yeah I finally got them to work. It wasn't easy though! Now I just have to finish the other cabinet... It still doesn't have the sides on it.
I forgot I'm also working on some new speaker cables so when they are done I'll post some pics.

Those are looking awesome!!
Magnifiscent! I wish I had just a tiny fraction of your skills.
Agreed. Wish I had the time and the tools to be able to build something like that.

Yep.....I'm digging where this is going myself. Those speakers are starting to come together nicely. They really remind me of my favorite speaker the GamuT L7.
(You are going to have some heavy cleaning to do when you are done!)

Got em both done! So far they sound awesome! I need to let them break in before to much is said though.
Incredible you finished them so fast, esp with a newborn in the house. Congrats!!
Fast? I started these like....8 months ago haha.
Well I've got my amp hooked up to my laptop now through my Audigy 2 sound card. It sounds quite a bit better then the other sound card but it also has a bit of a harsh top end. It's not horrible and listenable still but its an artifact of the sound card. Anyways back to my point. I'm listening to Pink Floyd - The Wall and I can not say enough about the dynamics of this speaker. Even on an album like there where its not horribly bass heavy there are just major dynamics in all aspects. The sound stage is really starting to open up as well. Whatever I end up doing about a DAC for my computer should add a lot to the depth and soundstage though. Regardless these speakers are just amazing to say the least, especially for the cost. You can get better for sure but probably not for less then twice the cost of these. And that's DIY costs... as far as a commercial speaker I don't even know where I could start....would be several thousand dollars though for sure.
My favorite thing about this CD is it has these little snippets of like very thin and faint things like music or sound effects and then all the sudden the music kicks in and the soundstage is huge compared to it. Really puts sound stage and what not into perspective.
They look killer and I have no doubt they sound the part. Well done young Jedi.
Do keep us tuned as they break in.
Oh yeah, I love The Wall. It's an amazing recording and quite the romp. It's one of my "ninth level deep" choices.
Everyone talks about DSOTM but I really like The Wall a lot better. The Wall and Animals are probably my favs of theirs.
Just a heads-up for anyone in the Long Island NY area in a month or so Greg at The Audio Shed will have a pair of Dynamic 4T's in his store on display and he'll be able to order completed speakers and what not. I believe the store MSRP will be 3100 for a pair and I believe it will be offered in several different finishes. Going the kit route you save some but you have a lot of work with the speakers and what not. Regardless I just thought I'd let you guys know because these speakers are fantastic and you could at least get a chance to listen to them :)
PS: BTW I'm not affiliated with The Audio Shed in anyways just thought some of you may like to swing in for a listen. I'm not sure exactly when he'll get them in I just know he's having a pair made to carry in his store.
When I perfect the teleporter, I'm there!
