Title: Need Suggestion for Small Inexpensive Floorstander
Post by: jcoat007 on January 26, 2010, 10:37:34 AM
I have a Marantz sr-19EX receiver that is currently collecting dust.  I would like to use it in another room with a Cambridge DVD player, Direct TV and video games.  This is where my kids watch TV.  I want a floorstander, small footprint and around $500.

Any suggestions?

Check out Monitor Audio . great great synergy with Marantz. Silverline as well. If you can find a used pair of B&W they also have an excellent synergy with Marantz.

Polk, Infinity and the like, you can check them out with good pictures at crutchfield.com. If you can build a stand you can probably get better hifi action from a bookshelf size speaker like parasound atom or tiny PSB, but doesn't sound like hifi matters in this system.

Not sure how they would go with the Marantz, but one of the best buys in a small floorstanding speaker right now is a pair of Vandersteen 1. They can be found on a regular basis on Audiongon for under $500.

These are $400, but I have seen them go for even less. The one thing you will need to be careful about this these is that they are no magnetically shielded, so they can nit be used close to an old-fashioned CRT based TV.

If you want to stay with new I would suggest taking a look at the Paradigm line. The Atoms are a great small speaker that can be had for well under $500 including a pair of stands. (technically not a floorstanding model, but a small monitor on a stand can quite often sound much better than a traditional floorstander. If you can get this past the wife, it might be worth considering.)

Rich,

Both of us typing a post about Paradigm Atoms at the same time - I guess great minds do think alike. :thumb:

PSB Image B6 bookshelf... MSRP is $500 I believe.... should be able to get for less and have enough for stands... they stood out at the CES show as stupid good for the money and tricked folks into thinking there was a floorstander playing...  I went in there to hear the new NAD digital amp and they were doing a demo at the other end of the room with these.  so I had to wait to hear the NAD and even I was impressed with the sound for not a lot of bucks...

Getting a good floorstander delivered for $500 isn't going to be easy.... newegg.com of all places was blowing out Polk floorstanders for cheap around christmas... no idea what they sound like.  The problem is that the cabinets aren't cheap to build... so a new $500 floorstander isn't exactly going to be 1 inch thick MDF with dampening inside the cabinet :)

used you can find some deals... audiogon is your friend in this instance...

No clue on the quality... but seems like a lot of good deal on the RTiX speakers by Polk.
Do an Amazon search on "Polk RTi8" and a lot come up... Fry's has black RTi8s for $199...
The RTi10's can be had for $275+$75 shipping via One Call through Amazon.

Seems to have reasonable reviews at AudioReview... for what that's worth.
