Title: My Manley Mahi Mahi Arrives Today!
Post by: Deton Nation on February 18, 2010, 07:57:11 AM
Yeah!!!! Woohoo. I am now more Manley than ever. Will be driving Merlin VSM MX 89 efficiency in a small to med room. Hopefully they will cut it.

Mitch Margolis is a genius designer. I bet you will love them. Manley has some of the cleverest tube circuits, best homemade iron and best service. I have their 300B amps, previously owned Snappers. It's a great brand all around. Congrats Mike

Thanks! I am really stoked to hear my first tube amps in my system. I always had a tube preamp but never a tube amp. So much glass!

How many watts is Mahi? It's four EL84s per monoblock, right?

It will sound very different than the NuForces. Some things it will do better, others not as good. Class D bass is pretty awesome, but Manley amp high freqs are pretty awesome too. Get some violin records! hehe

I think its supposed to have pretty good bass. Something about Joules being stored up making the bass a lot better. When compared to the Manley Integrated which has less bass.

My Snappers sounded very ballsy on the low stuff. They roll great iron, makes low output impedance, typically <2ohms actual Z, which is lower than most of the big names. Yet the transformers are still small. I don't know how they do it, but they claim to work really hard on the transformer designs, all wound in-house. Even my 300Bs have 1.8 ohm actual outputZ, makes nice bass.

Sitting listening to them... Very nice. They are fast sounding, no flab. I like triode mode in standard feedback (6db), a little set back sound stage, where minimum is really close to the sound stage. They are not warm sounding like I thought they might be, pretty neutral. Great ambiance and they seem to play loud enough. I had to swap out my unshielded cables for shielded Blue Jean cables, as they are RF magnets. I also need to get some rubber feet (using Paper towels ;) ) they vibrate on the cabinet a bit.

I biased them myself! (Im an uber technician!) I have to listen more before giving further impressions!

Cool. ENJOY ! Wubber feet ? Da cones da cones. Tube amps require some draining of resonance. Try either cones or a air bladder like the Arcicci stuff. Made a big difference for me with the Cyber 211s. Wubber will do zippo.
After about 100 hours of break in you'll be in tube heaven.

I just ordered some grover sx for between pre and tube amp. Since I had to switch to a shielded cable (Blue Jean, only one I have) instead of my normal MAC Palladiums I have some grit upper mids and high that kind of wash out (which could be the recording also), So I am hoping Grovers cables will do the trick!

I am fairly new to this web site and just happened upon your comments about the Manley Mahi Mahis and was wondering if you still have them and, if so, how you now feel about them.  I have owned and greatly enjoyed the Stingray for a couple of years and have been wondering if the Mahis, coupled with an active pre-amp, might offer an improvement in sound over what I now have.  Understand that what I have now sounds great, but I am always interested in making things sound better if I can do it at a reasonable cost.  I didn't know if you had possibly compared the Mahis with the Stingray and, if so, what was you take on the differences between the two.

I have had the Mahi's for a little while and they are very quick with a punchy bottom end that suprised me for such tiny (EL84) power tubes. i also prefer Mikes setting of triode with the minumum feedback setting used. my personal tastes lean towards a more liquid midrange than the Mahi's present . i cannot find fault with the Mahis at all but it is pretty safe to say that ultimately they are not my cup of tea. i just bought a VTL ST-150 with 150 wpc in tetrode and 90 wpc in triode. Luke Manley recomends 92db or higher loudspeakers while running in triode mode to get the best results from this amp. my Sonatina 2's are rated at 93db and should have good synergy with the ST-150.i should get the VTL by the end of this week. i offered The Raven in a PM a chance to listen to the Mahi's in his system.my offer still stands.thanks....WCW III
