Title: July Rave
Post by: rollo on June 22, 2010, 11:37:16 AM
Well either the 24 th or 31st depending on when my amps are ready. Right now thw 31st appears to be best as the transformers are going out this week from China. Hopefully all will be OK for the 24th. which   Iam pushing for.
If weather permits we will set up Maggie 3As outside against the rear wall of the house. Omega speakers for the flea powered amps in another room. The Pipedreams in the main system. Bring amps CDPs and DACs or whatever you like. An Italian feast will be prepared by me. Please RSVP for either or both dates, so we can work it out.

Well I've got prior family comitments on the 24th, so the 31st is better for me, and I'd love to attend.

Hey Charles,

I could bring along my Atma-Sphere OTL if you think that would be a good idea and don't mind another visitor. Plinius maybe? Metric Halo DAC? Not sure if any of that fits the bill.

I'm fighting a pretty annoying head cold right now but either of those dates sound good, health permitting.

Greg

So did you get a full ban again, or did you just get banned for the NYAR forum, because I can use it  :-k

P.S. I'd be happy to facilitate a Gallo Acoustics forum, I've got a pretty good line on what they've got going on ;)

And will probably getting it for the rest of the summer (or at least until this heat breaks). Electric generating capacity in the NY Metro area is really being pushed to the limit  and every time LIPA or Con Ed tries to build a new plant all of the "not in my backyarders" throw a fit  and block the construction. And until somebody gets enough backbone to say that the overall public welfare outweighs the protests of the small special interest groups we are going to have to put up with voltage reductions every time it gets hot and demand starts to spike. (and it will only get worse as some of the older plants start to break down and we are faced with a situation where not only will we need to build more capacity to serve increasing demand, but we will also have to build new plants to replace some of our existing generating capacity as well.)

Charles-
Thanks for a great time- the food was fabulous. An even BIGGER thank you to Joann- she was in constant motion keeping it all together.
The exposure to all the different equipment outside was a revelation. I never thought the Maggies could do outside duty like that- boy was I wrong...

The rave was great! Thanks so much to the hosts, Charles and Joan for having us over and providing such great food and drink.

The music was really nice and much to my surprise the system set up outside was better that I thought possible. The Maggies are a true champ speaker and when paired with the Plinius Sa-100 amp, and Charles  tube preamp the sound was so nice.

Thanks Charles and Joanne for hosting the July rave.
Great weather and great food and drink, the limonata was great!

I think this was the first out door rave. The Maggies sounded really great outside.
I thought the Plinius and Wienser, Lector combo was the best.
We also had fun with power cords which made a big difference , even outdoors!
The enchanter power cord was my favorite, it just synergized with the system really well.

Sorry we blew the fuses on the AR 60 :duh

But honestly the real fun was outside, it was just too beautiful to be inside.

Thanks!

Best Rave yet!!! Thanks for hosting Charles. You have a great house and a generous family!!!! What a great rave. It was worth the wait. The food was delicioso and the Maggie's sounded amazing outdoors. Who would have thought? The Pipedreams need your 211's to sing.  I may have been one of the only people to hear the little system upstairs, which sounded pretty good for a single driver system. what was that little amp powering them?

Thanks Charles and Joanne for throwing such a great party and being wonderful hosts.

Thanks Charles and Joanne for hosting the July/Aug. Rave......
....................................an Italian feast for sure...excellent food!!!

As others have mentioned, I think it's a first for the Rave......
...................an outdoor setup...and it sounded very good. 8)

And it was a beautiful day as well.... :thumb:

Nice to see some of the Audio Syndrome members attending....and the Ravers.

I listened to the two systems...missed the third one.....
...............amazing that you got those PipeDreams in the basement...with just a few inches to spare...

Sounded good down there....but you need to sit back a little further to get the full effect.
I did notice that with some CDR's, the Lector CDP skipped a bit or two.... :?

Outside the Maggies did a fine job....who'd a thought. :thumb:
It was just like an outdoor concert....airy,music floating throughout the yard...enjoyable.
A very nice experience. :D

Thanks again for hosting.....I had a great time....

A very big thanks to Charles and Joanne for their wonderful hospitality and the fabulous feast they provided.

I spent 95% of the day outside enjoying the open-air performance provided by the Maggies driven by the fabulous Plinius SA-100 MkIII.

You have to drill down into the picture and get the Direct Link shown at the bottom of the page. The link from properties doesn't work (like it does at AC)

This is a cool shot  8)

Thanks Barry. A great day, it was a pleasure meeting you. BTW guys the Classic 60 is OK. It was just the fuses that blew.  :duh  Audiophiles are dangerous.

They should be tested on man nipples before going to actual amps... ;)

Superkock 2 is now ready for prime time, sorry for this hiccup.

Perhaps I will do a little listen session at my house with the new 26 tube pre so others can hear what DHT tubes can do. And we can hear what I/V transformers can do to DACs! Now that the Sowters are in place.
It can be a game changer. These DIY guys are onto something other than just changin caps.

So whats a superkock ? Is that like an Italian sausage ? Are ya ready for a throwdown ? I'm willing to drive out to NJ.

Superkock is our name for Karl's preamp designs. The first Superkock is owned by Joe in Katonah, a WE 417 tube chole loaded preamp. Superkock 2 is the 2nd version which is a Tango choke loaded 26 tube preamp. Unfortunatley the power supply had a problem, he has removed the tube rectified power supply and installed a solid state power supply, which eliminated the hum. He has a 26 tube preamp that is Black Art transformer coupled with a huge power supply of 4 oil filled chokes in copper chassis's. The very large tube rectified power supply has enough filtration to eliminate the hum but the smaller tube version did not. Working with a 26 tube is not easy, many give up, I would too, but I heard what a 26 tube can do, and brother there ain't anything like it in the preamp world.
As far as I am concerned.
I am picking up the supercock 2 and his own superdac with the Sowter I/V's in place, tonite, to install in my system. Let's just say that a normally reserved man was very, very, emotional and excited over the phone regarding the I/V's. They may change the game. He actually took out the tube section of his dac. The trans have enough juice to drive the dac chips withou the tubes. I never heard him so excited, So naturally I am excited and gotta hear it as well. I have a pair of the I/V's for my Lector, which may be next in line for another mod.

Regarding throwdown?  No throwdowns, I like having little listening sessions where we get to hear, experience and learn what these things do. Sometimes when you are mining for copper you hit gold!
Many times it is the opposite, it makes it worse, but what the hell it is fun trying. And you really do learn. It is so much better than just reading about this stuff.

BTW I am building a cryogenic chamber for us. So if we need anything cryo'd, it will be easily and readily available soon.

Mike

Next up is a transformer coupled DHT tubed hybrid solid state amp, just for fun!!

I love this hobby!

Just take the hotdogs out of the freezer first before cryoing.

Sounds like you are having a blast on your little journey. Can't wait to hear it.

Mike, can you tell me what DAC chip is in your DAC? I want to compare its specs to my ESS DAC chip. Mine requires very low load impedance to stay in current mode, hard to do with a tranny. But I suspect an easier load in voltage mode will sound good too, maybe 120dB s/n instead of 135... blablabla

You are running DAC chip > Sowters> output jacks, right?

Rich,
The dac is my friends that he built in an old copper chassis from audio note.
It uses 4 philips "crown" chips tda 1541a. No caps in the signal path. It had  tube rectification and ran WE 417 tubes, but he pulled them out and replaced them with the sowters. Plenty o gain for this chipset.
My initial impression:
Extremely clean and refined, female voices are beautiful.
Great tone
Lots of air, great focus and soundstage

I think I would like a litlle more midrange weight, we may put tubes back in.
The sowters have maybe 20 to 30 minutes on them so they need time to burn in, I will run it for a few days on repeat to see what happens. I have not played with power cords yet, that could change lots of things...unfortunatley :D
will keep you updated

Mike

1541, I think that is what was in my Altmann DAC... nice NOS sound. But I imagine it sounds even better without Altmann's 2 stage opamp output.   With 4 chips you should have plenty of current for the tranny and ICs. Did ya get the pre too? Maybe it will plump the singers boobs a little.

Rich,
I have the 26 tube in my system. One of the 26 tubes went bad and both of them are very microphonic. He used a cheap teflon tube socket which may have been cheap as its virtue. We are looking at a better teflon solution as well as using larger electrolytics for the power supply.
His large 26 tube pre is a 2 chhassis behemoth, and adresses mostly all the hum issues simply by being overdesigned. This smaller single chassis pre is an attempt to do a scaled down trimmed down version at a much more affordable price. There is a learning curve with this 26 tube. But once done right the 26 tube is glorious.

Oh a "26" tube. I thought you said there were 26 tubes in the preamp. I was picturing you sweating profusely in your listening puddle.

I know it's blasphemy, but since Karl is already going to hell for putting sand in your tube pre, what about regulators? Paul Hynes makes some nice ones. His shunt reg specs are incredible - PSRR is 110dB, Zout 2mOhms!  Noise .5nV, settling 50nS.

I think you could use only one for shared (stereo) B+, it's fast enough to make 20mA for two 26s without crosstalk. It's 5uS between samples at 192kHz, this reg settles 100 times faster! You're probably sharing B+ now anyway? Then another one for both heaters. Byebye hum. The low impedance will allow the tube play as strong as it possibly can, bass impact, etc.

If Karl needs a specific voltage on B+ then you might need to buy a new transformer, but you can ditch the big storage and chokes. If you can donate 10V to the regulator then you can use the PS you already have. 2 regs + current sources about $450. They run hot so they need some air, or heatsink if you reduce the voltage very far below input, but you won't have that problem. They can probably bolt to the bottom of your case, if you have the room...  http://www.paulhynesdesign.com/

Then Karl can light up the heaters in a dummy big bottle rectifier tube on top as a disguise....  :thumb:

can you image a pre with 26 tubes!  Maybe a OTL pre!
