Will this further improve digital playback? Maybe reduce error codes, but probably not affect playback quality. But failing transport lasers should be a thing of the past. But will it arrive before CDs are a thing of the past?
I'm sure audiophiles will think of new uses for precise reliable and cheap lasers.

I would think that if this new generation of lasers can reduce bit errors then that would lead to better sound. On paper, fewer errors would lead to less interpolation which would then produce a cleaner more faithful digital bitstream and therefore better sound once that bitstream is decoded. [-o< (Hey, a guy can dream, can't he?)
Error codes in the existing standard eliminates interpolation. The digital output of a $30 DVD player is virtually perfect.

Reducing error codes might reduce jitter marginally, but there are other hardware issues that cause jitter after the laser. Probably not enough life remaining in the redbook standard to warrant any new engineering.
Optical interconnects anyone? Laser trimming of output devices, like Edge? How else could these be used in audio??

That was a good article. I didn't realize the red book error correction scheme was as robust as it is.

That's always been so interesting and frustrating to me - that the data is perfect. It really does come down to word timing. It's amazing that a few picoseconds of jitter, which average out to zero over a millisecond is still very audible distortion. The brain's resolution is infinite.
