What are the odds of this?
At the suggestion of Charles Rollo regarding my Goldenote Stibbert CD player, I changed my matched pair of RCA branded 6DJ8's (German made Siemens 6DJ8's) & substituted a brand NOS matched pair of equivalent Voskhod Rocket Logo 6N23p's cryo'd by Dave E @ PI Audio.
For those unfamiliar with the Stibbert CD player, it's a bit of a PIA to change tubes (lifting & removing the spring suspension & then removing two separate covers). Well, I accomplished that & put the unit back in service, turned on CD player, then both amps & both tube regulated PS for the preamp. All of the sudden, heard a funny noise out of the right channel & then no sound... :duh I said to myself, "those damn USSR Kaluga factory tubes with such a great reputation... @^%$#@$!!!"
As I was about to rip apart the Stibbert again, I said I should try my Sony 9000ES player... still no sound from right channel...interesting... then tried my WT TT... still no sound...
To make a long story shorter, I narrowed it down & found that one of my tube regulated power supplies, my Gen Rad 1201-A, had a failure at the exact same time I switched tubes in the CD player. These PS are very rugged & reliable... I never had an issue in these vintage power supplies in 7 years... Luckily, I had a pair of Gen Rad 1201-B's on my Tannoy system & put them in my K-horn system... Voila... Back to the sweet, sweet music! Those USSR tubes sound really nice!
What are odds of this happening??
The only other cosmic audio experience I had is when I ordered my Sony 9000ES SACD player from Sony in California. On the day it arrived, I decided to play my Marantz 67SE player one last time & guess what? It didn't work... must have had "hurt feelings" about being replaced that day... Go Figure! What are the odds?
Guess I should play Lotto tomorrow...
Sorry to ramble... but it was a bit weird to me...
Pete
When the stars align ...
Those rocket logo 6922's are pretty nice. They have great detail and a pretty balanced sound, although a little light compared to some NOS brands.
Pete the cryoed version of that tube shoud have a fuller sound. Never used that tube myself.
Now that you have changed the tubes you will get an idea of how much tube change affects the Stibbert. So are you done ? No. If you can get your hands on a pair of NOS Mullards or Amperex Bugle Boys to check out. Just so happens I have them for you to check out. :thumb: Not for sale just trying :)
So listen a while and when your ready to disassemble the Stibbert again, give them a listen.

The best way to avoid Murphy is to KISS.
The next best way to not operate the system under any "pressure" (like having audio buds or a hot date visit).

My system is the epitomy of KISS, "point to point" wired, easy serviceability & great reliability (usually)...
Kudos for being prepared to fix it so easily! :thumb:
Tell me about it. Our Club Christmas meeting is Friday so a perfect time for my preamp to go down. Murphy. Ordered new tubes which were supposed to be here today. Gotta break them in yet. Never arrived. Murphy. The passive is in now. No LPs and a new TT. Murphy.
Murphy are ya listening, back off. :duh

Charles - what tubes do you need and how many of each? I'm sure we can figure out a way to get your preamp working for the meeting. It's definitely not fair to not have vinyl playing on the new Kuzma.

Or maybe somebody has a phone stage that is either not hooked up right now or at least easy to unhook that they can bring along and run into your line stage. Why don't you send an SOS email out to the club, that way you will also hit all the folks that don't hang out here.
I am sure among all of the people that are coming we can get something together to make this happen.
The tubes are for the power supply. Pete could always bring his power supplies. However the tubes should arrive tomorrow. No delivery today. :x
Second option Mark K can bring his phonostage and Pre. SS but really really good.

Charles...........
Glad to hear your tube regulated power supplies are working. I had my GenRad 1201-A's packed up ready for your system!
See you in 90 minutes!
Pete
Thanks Pete. The best part of the story is that the new tubes really brought the system back to life.
Especially the RCA 5687 bronze plates. Going to try the NOS Sylvania 6GK5 in the pre in lieu of the RCA there now.
Just dead quite. Although Murphy through in a monkey wrench I'm kinda glad he did.
Also found out the preferred tracking force on the Boboli. It is 1.5 grams. Straightened out the tonearm cable and no more drift when lowering. The learning curve. Oye!!
Pete thanks again for your time and effort in setting up the TT. Sounds even better today. turned it off at 3AM this morning.
