Title: Samet I-15
Post by: richidoo on April 30, 2013, 02:15:16 PM
I just got a new amp. The I-15 is a 15W integrated SS amp designed and built by Sol Samet.

It is mostly broken in now, and I am enjoying it immensely. Open, communicative, no SS harshness, no class A fatness. Strong punchy bass. Tonal texture in abundance.

Powering my 95dB speakers now.

Pics coming

A distant relative, hmmmm. I will have to look him up. Does he have a webpage Rich, can't find one.

Cheers.

Hi Steve, Sol does not have an audio website yet. We locals keep him more than busy with audio mods, repairs and one off custom designs. He will eventually become full time mfg, but for now he loves his job as radio engineer.

Thanks Mike, mine is the third unit built so not much about it online, yet.

Thanks for the reminder William! I forgot to post the pics...  :duh

We are working on a PCB for this amp to bring it to market - along with a bunch of other products, electronics and other.

As Bird said, "Now's the Time."

It looks very compact is it mosfet powered?

Bipolars. Only 5 transistors per channel, so it is very simple. Driver is 200MHz so feedback is faster than the outputs. It sounds fast and alive even with fairly high feedback level which makes extremely low distortion and low impedance.

A little update:

It's been a few weeks now, I have been running it 24/7. When new it would wake up cranky, sounding bright so I just left it on so my morning classical radio would sound nice. I need to check if that has improved with break-in. There is temperature compensation and Sol says he can make an adjustment to improve that if necessary.

My vinyl listening has really increased dramatically since I got this amp. I think there is a great synergy with vinyl... or maybe just coincidence.

It sounds open and clear like tubes, but the tight bass, low distortion and clean loud crescendos are like SS. I smile when I look up to see how much sound is coming out of this small inconspicuous box.

Break in took a couple weeks, but seems to have settled now. I don't notice any of the early tonal issues anymore.

There is an aliveness or presence that is like tube amps.  It makes you feel that "something is happening" feeling that makes music listening so much fun.

I am working hard on the PCB.

Sounds like Sol has a winner and you as well. For me presence and clarity are key to great sound. just add some texture and we have a go.
