Title: Maggies .7X Not Available for a Listen by Dealers
Post by: bmr3hc on May 08, 2025, 08:46:18 AM
I have been looking to audition the Magnepan .7X Speakers. It seems no dealers actually carry them for a demo/listen. Some dealers do have the .7 for a listen but not the .7X  At 4000.00, I am not willing to order without first hearing them first. Especially, if they are supposed to be much better.

I have owned the 1.5 Maggies before driven by a Mark Levinson 27.5 amp. Was very happy with them then with the amp. This was many moons ago.

I currently have the Quad 2805 Speaker with the 125wpc Music Reference MK11 amp. They are now having popping noise.  I am considering repairing or going a different route altogether. I have talked to Kent at Electrostatic Solutions on repairing the Quads. Anyone here had any experienced repairing the Quad Speakers through Kent?

Suggestion/ideas on repairing or a different speaker if you have had a Maggie or Electrostatic before.

Thanks

Henry

Hi Henry,

Interesting there are no dealers in NC that carry these. Any interest in traveling to South Carolina, Virginia to hear them? There must be some dealers that would carry them.
I've only heard Quad speakers once, and those were Quad ESL 57s at a Linn dealer. I liked the speakers, but the Linn amps, not very much.

A few years ago, I did a lot of research on guys who do Quad upgrades. But I didn't save any of the information. HAL, aka Rich Hollis on this website, uses Maggie speakers and maybe he will have some information for you.

Please let us know what you decide.

I think Dave knows someone that works on Quad speakers.

Maybe a call to Magnepan sales will give a POC in NC to be able to hear the 0.7X version.  They might know of a customer that would demo them for you.

IMHO stick with the Quads. Have them repaired.

I get it that no dealer is going to carry every model for a demo. They all seem to have the .7 and 1.7x for a demo. When I had the Magnepan 1.5 and the Mark Levinson 27.5 amp the sound was magical. I have yet to hear better and no sub back then.
Getting the Quads repaired presents a challenge of transport logistics. I do not have the original boxes.
I purchased a used pair of .7 which should arrive in two more days. I will see how they sound with my Music Reference MKll 125wpc tube amp. I also purchased the Maggie upgraded speaker stands.
I still may consider repairing the Quads by Kent at Electrostatic Solution in Kansas City with full upgrades.
Any recommendation on where to purchase upgraded fuses. I have them already in my amp and Abbington Music Research Tube DAC to good effect.

Thanks

Henry

Congratulations on the purchase. There are some who ditch the fuses and use solid copper instead. Utube guy OCD Mikey used to offer those. I have not tried tried any exotice, high priced fuses.... yet

Thanks Nick. I know someone who uses this method. I would be too concern about just how this could be effective protecting the speaker.

Vera-Fi sells Slugs. Graphene, copper and Rhodium I believe. If you do not blast the volume really no need for use. Had mine for many many years without fuse. The "X" version is just a upgraded crossover. Check out GR Research Mod. Easy and sounds better.

Sure, Henry. I quite understand. But I have read about some very good results about using copper slugs.

Let us know what you decide to do.

Nick
After talking to a couple of friends who actually used the solid copper instead of the stock fuses, with great results, I purchased them from Mike the OCD guy. I am very impressed with the immediate and very noticeable results. Another friend purchased them and installed in his LRS+ and very happy with the immediate and noticeable results as well.
The highs are much smoother and the bass is simply better. With the stock fuses, some music was a bit too harsh in the upper frequencies. The bass not as well defined as with the solid copper. The solid copper install was simply much better. Highly recommended with Maggies.

That's great news, Henry. Glad to hear it! OCD Mikey and some other guys know how to optimize Maggie performance 🎶
