For years the Tungsol NOS 5687 was my perferred 5687 in the Loesch & Weisner Pre [ output] and the Consonance Cyber 211 mono blocks [ driver ]
Well the RCA NOS 5687 is now the King as a driver tube for the 211. Really liking the tone. If you use 5687 try them. Rich yet detailed. Bass is fuller and deeper. Not expensive.

No I have not tried 7044. They were sourced from Tubeworld.

Charles,

Just thought I'd mention that I have a set of GE 7044s currently not being used if you were interested in checking those out.

Would like to try the Bendix 6900s in my preamp but the pricing on those is a bit out of hand.

I had the GE 7044 in my Sira pre, did not like it at all, the Tungsol was the best for me.
Of course  tubes perform differently in different circuits, the 7044 was just not very good in mine.
Always wanted to try the 6900, just the opportunity never arose  :(

System consists of an amp a preamp, 2 speakers a turntable and a phono preamp, Also some cables and power cords and a really cheap cd player.

In your preamp for the line, or final stage of phono section, you can utilize the 5687, 6DJ8, 7044 or 12BH7A's...

Arthur (Loesch) prefers the 5687 variety & John (Wiesner) prefers 6DJ8's (he likes the RCA, Made in W. Germany Siemens). The 7044 works but is bright sounding. I have a pair of NOS GE's (be careful, those are long tubes in which  the tips protrude through the vent holes on the pre!). I have a NOS pair of Amperex 12BH7A's but don't remember trying them in the pre-amp. The RCA 6DJ8's sound great & the Tung Sol 5687's sound a bit better to my ears... I also have a NOS pair of Sylvania "FAA-approved" 5687WA's that sound great too...

The Bendix (Red Bank, NJ) 6900 are pretty great sounding. They make the ultimate driver tube for WE 300B SET amps... however, they are crazy priced & I've heard some 5687 equivalents sound very close...

My $0.02...

If I were Charles, I'd focus on finding some really quiet WE 417A tubes, the achilles heel of your phono pre-amp... unfortunately many are a bit noisy & microphonic but when you find a quiet pair, you'll be in heaven; nothing better!!!

Cheers,
Pete

you might try the 6c45pi tube as a replacement for the 417, a very nice sounding and extremely rugged tube
