I'm starting to get the itch to hear these. When Anand and Jason were at my place last month they raved about the Abbeys, so I invited myself to visit Jason in the fall to hear them.

They have a new all-urethane molded enclosure now, replacing the MDF box of the past.

Some questions I have are:
How much do Summas cost? I assume they are overkill for my room.
Are the Abbey crossovers phase coherent like LR? The parts pictures in the sample manual online look like 3rd order.
How many subs are ideal?
Will they be playing at RMAF?

The Summa's were $6K at one time, but that was some years ago. No idea what they cost now.

Crossovers phase coherent? Not sure but I doubt it. They really don't follow any standard formula.

Subs - I believe at least 3 is the recommendation.

Playing at RMAF, pretty sure the answer is no. But of course my offer is still open. ;)

Thanks Mike.  :thumb:  You know I'd love to make it. There's always miracles...

Earl replied quickly to my email today and said Summa is not in production right now, as Abbey is too close in performance. He may make a 15a in the future, but nothing close yet.

A lot of commercial 2 ways use 2nd order on the woofer and 3rd order on the top, even Vance Dickason's textbook designs, and my midfi Infinitys.

I've been reading the diyaudio threads, hundred of pages, and lots more on AC.

The one thing that worries me is that i like to listen to the music from the stereo while i work in the kitchen, which is 90 degrees off axis of the drivers. The OB speakers did not do it. Seems like the high directivity wg may have similar issue, by design. Maybe the sweet spot will be so sweet that it's worth the off axis sacrifice.

Electrical order and acoustic order(actual roll off) are not always the same.

For example, with some drivers it's possible to make an 8th order acoustic filter from only a 2nd order electrical filter plus zobel.

Don't be concerned with the parts count, it's the overall design and parts quality that matter most.  And it's still possible to get good phase tracking and very coherent sound with mixed/hybrid slopes.

I understand. I have not really listened to these much outside of the room since they live in a dedicated space but from time to time I crank them up with the doors open while I'm doing stuff in the basement. I found I was pretty happy with that and I'm guessing unless the room is really dead there will still be enough reflection to make it tolerable. Can't say for sure tho.

My current speakers are acoustically matched filters, but not in electrical phase, and it is audible.

I understand everything you said except how to get good phase tracking with mixed electrical slopes. afaik only symmetric filters have coherent electrical phase through the crossing band.

Rich,

Troels goes a little into phase tracking here: http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/HDS164.htm

Here's what good phase tracking looks like, from the egomaniacs at Y.G. Acoustics: http://www.ygacoustics.com/UploadFiles/file/PDF/YG%20Acoustics%20DualCoherent%20Brochure.pdf

Thanks Mike (Face)

That's pretty impressive for passive parts. Serious matching effort to do that with steep slopes.
