Quoting from wiki

"LCoS technology can produce much higher resolution images than liquid crystal display"

It is neither LCD nor DLP.  DLP has moving mirrors.  LCoS/DILA do not.  LCoS/DILA hs a MUCH smaller gap between pixels than any pure LCD does.  Yes, it is a crystal, but, it IS reflective like DLP (not transmissive like LCD) but nothing moves (like DLP), gaps are smaller, fill factor is higher, etc.

The beauty of this technology is that when a pixel is 'open' the light that would normally be reflected goes into a hole.  It's not reflected into other areas of the PJ.  The open pixels are also not hit with light from adjoining pixels.

When I went from a CRT (NEC XG Series) to a digital PJ, I looked around a long time to find something that gave me the close to the same black levels, the same color accuracy, and the same smooth, film-like picture.  The Sony LCoS and the JVC DILA's were the only 2 that were even close IMO.

And don't be fooled by ridiculous contrast numbers.  Most are rated full on to full off which is useless.  They are also rated with everything cranked up full bore - not even close to being calibrated.  If you look at a JVC/Sony calibrated vs. one of these newer low priced 'light cannons' properly calibrated, you'll actually get MORE light out of the JVC/Sony and better contrast/black levels.

That said, the piece you're looking at appears to be a great buy for the money.  Not trying to knock it in any way.  Just explaining the technical differences.

Well then Sony is marketing their stuff wrong? They put SXRD which is an LCOS but it says 3 LCD all over it.

Then it's a misnomer.  Definition of SXRD

SXRD (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) is Sony's proprietary variant of liquid crystal on silicon.  LCoS is actually a licensed derivative of JVC's patented DILA (Digital Image Light Amplifier)

It's still reflective and is still LCoS - it just has one for each primary color instead of 1 for all 3 colors.  This in theory will allow more overall light output.  Technically, it is a liquid crystal - just a reflective one.  Some marketing genius must have figured the general public knows the term LCD.

Well I got some clamps from Harbor Freight today, they just put a local retail store in and I must say it's pretty awesome :) Last time I built a set of speakers I ordered this huge clamp set off ebay and spent 100 bucks on them and they were plastic and junk most didn't work and the ones that did didn't work for very long. I spent about 60 bucks on 5 aluminum channel clamps today and they are great quality. I got 1 60" and 4 24" clamps. Other prices I've seen on 60" bar or channel clamps is at least 40 bucks each. Granted these are still not top quality I don't feel as though they will fail any time soon if ever. I started something. I sanded the edges of the baffle to make them right and then glued it up and clamped it. So finally something on my speakers is getting done :)

Nice!  What a cool building blog you have going on.

Those are some SERIOUS clamps.

Looking forward to the build process.

?

Anyways getting a little bit more done here and there. I have to glue up one piece at a time right now as I'm laminating so pretty much have to use all the clamps for one piece. I'm hoping to have one cabinet done maybe end of next week though.

Well was a bit confused as the guy that is designing the crossover and what not of the speakers name is Jed :) Didn't think I had mentioned him here although I probably should have lol.

Another little update, close to finishing the first cabinet. Although the hard part is ahead which is wrapping the sides around.

Dougie085

Welll I just keep having issues with the sides on this thing... I can't seem to get them to go on right for anything. And then they start cracking. Thinking about ditching the curved cabinets at this point and just going for the traditional ones.

Yeah but hardly worth all this hassle. We'll see but honestly right now I don't have high hopes for the curved ones. If they braces were designed differently bendy board would work perfect...but the way they are right now it would be hard.
