Our wonderfull utility company has dropped power to 105V today. How can this voltage affect our gear ? Will running at 105V do any damage ? Concerned.

Pretty sure a 'low voltage' situation won't do any harm, though things may not perform as well as when they've got a full 120v to work with. Blame Evan ;)

Thanks Barry. BTW have you spoken to Ron Bauman at Mapleshade with reference to your gallos. They Mod them and to my ears a wondefull improvement. One of our club members has them . Very impressive to say the least.

No, but Anthony did build them for me at his house ;)

Cool. Ask anthony about the mods I believe he is familiar with them. Any way see ya the 24th.

I'll ask him about it, but I don't think Pierre has started modding the 3.5 yet.

Re: the 24th, that date is difficult for me, as I've got some prior family commitments, but we'll see.

Any high quality power supply should have good enough regulation to maintain its rail voltages in the face of a 10-16% input voltage drop. So there  should be no risk to the operating section of the component itself. However; in order to provide the normal power to the component (in terms of rail voltages and current) the power supply would have to pull more current from the wall to make up for the lower input voltage. While may not pose much of a problem for a power supply that is running at the lower end of its capacity it could cause damage in a power supply that is approaching it's maximum output in the first place. For example a 200 WPC power amp that is only putting out about 20 watts would have plenty of "headroom" to pull the extra current without causing any damage. However if you are running an 8watt set amp at 7 1/2 watts there might not be enough spare capacity in the power supply and running it at a lower voltage/higher current could possibly end up damaging something in the power supply itself (and I say maybe because I have not way of knowing how much the power supply in any given component has been overbuilt.

How about hearing from some of our EEs and PEs. Does this sound reasonable to you guys or am I way off base? (and while any of this may or may not be true in theory, in practice does any of it really matter or are all power supplies purposely overbuilt to handle this exact situation.) The summer is far from over and I am sure we will have to contend with voltage reductions several more times before the Fall.
