Another artist that I did concert sound for back in my days at the Lakeside Theater. The day of the show he had a Concert Grand delivered direct from Steinway, and had one of the factory techs tune it right on the spot. He hen made what sounded like a strange request , but actually made a lot of sense. He asked is if we could get two 100 what drop lights from the auto shop and put them inside the piano until just before showtime. Lakeside is an outdoor venue and he was afraid that if it started to get humid towards sunset the humidity could cause the wood inside the piano to swell ever so slightly, but enough to shift the tuning that he just had done. The bulbs would generate enough heat to keep the inside of the piano dry even if the ambient humidity started to rise. Actually pretty smart. But as particular as he was about his instrument, he was always very appreciative of what we did for him and a real gentleman with the staff. Most of my stage crew was made up of high school kids, rather than union stagehands, and I think he actually enjoys hanging out with them during  the sound checks in the afternoon.

I have run across a number of albums at the crack house recently by artists that I worked with at the theater. It's really kind of fun to relive those times.

Another one of these flaky DualDiscs. Wouldn't play worth a dam on my CDP, (skipped all over the place.) 
But it did in my computer, so I burned a copy onto a CD-R and that plays fine in the CDP (a Denon 2910 Universal player.)   

Unfortunately, the album really wasn't really worth the trouble. Some rather uninspired readings of older Big Band/Sinatra type standards.  And on top of that her voice isn't what it once was. I wouoldn't go out of my way for this one. (Hey, at least she still looks good.  )

You know the old saying "You get what you  pay for"? Well this 2 LP set was 53 cents at the Crack House and I still feel like I got ripped off. Yuck!

That is the nice thing about shopping there. I never would have given a album like this a second look at full price but for half a buck I'd take a chance. This one turned out to be a clunker, but I have had many more that I took a flyer on and turned out to be very nice. Win some, you lose some.

Rossini Overtures: Toscanini/NBC Symphony Orchestra



It is such a shame that Toscanini passed away just before the start of stereo recordings. RCA Living Stereo recordings of his work would have been gems indeed.
