Wendy Carlos: Secrets of Synthesis



This is an "audio documentary" Wendy Carlos' approach to recording music using electronic synthesizers. But while I first thought is would be about playing with the technology it really talks a lot about the process of putting together a musical score and most if not all of the concepts have direct correlation to the process of orchestration with acoustic instruments. I was really surprised at how much formal musical planing and composition  went into her work. I found I learned a lot more about music itself from this disc than I did about electronic toys. Not something I would play over and over, but  definitely worth a listen if you can get your hands on a copy. (try your local library, that's where I found this copy.)

1st side of this lp is masterful, side 2 not too shabby either.

I first was struck by the opening track and album title track, but as time has passed and multiple listenings later, the next tune, 'Totem Pole', has become my fav, the interplay between Morgan and sax player Joe Henderson is 1st rate.

Very dynamic electric jazz.

Can be had on amazon for as little as 1 cent for a very good disc and a quarter for a "Like New" copy
