I just heard a track from this on the radio, I think it's the most beautiful music I've heard in a long time. Can't wait to hear the whole thing.

I received this by mail today. Brand new, $6 delivered. Gotta love Amazon Marketplace.

Sound quality is excellent with lots of natural reverb. Very dynamic and animated clean performance. Just getting into it now.

The first few tracks are easy listening Shosty, Jazz Suite and Gadfly. Very well recorded. The second half of the CD is both Piano Concertos 1 and 2. These are very well played by the pianist and conductor, but they fight a battle trying to drag the orchestra along at the correct tempos. The trumpeter is a wimp but has a big fat tone. I have another recording of the 1st concerto by Lise De La Salle on EMI which is better all around. This is the only 2nd concerto I have though, and it was the 2nd Concerto's Andante 2nd movement from this CD that I heard on the radio which sounded so lovely. It didn't disappoint tonight, even without the FM radio compression. The recording quality on the concertos is good but not up to audiophile standards. It gets congested and a little chesty in the big peaks, unlike the first part of the CD with different bands and conductors, and different venue's I presume. It is really hard to record piano concertos well, because pianos want to be close miked, while symphony orchestra wants distant mikes. This Andante is so beautiful I'm gonna try to seek out some better versions of it.

I noticed this one while browsing Amazon. It is Naxos so the recording will be damn near perfect. I have some other CDs by New Zealand SO which are very good.

Heroic Overtures - Paray/Detroit Symphony Orchestra

LP

Musicall very nice, but has some strange artifacts from a SQ point of view. Beautiful tonality and detail but has a very compressed soundstage on a front to rear basis. Sounds somewhat unnatural when the triangle sounds like it is placed in the middle of the violin section instead of behind it.

Excellent LP for casual listening from another room where the imaging is not really an issue.

My favorite Brahms symphony and one of my three favorite recordings of it.  The other two are from Fritz Reiner and Otto Klemperer.

This is the first recording to use the name "Jazz Messengers," although Blakey had called his band that for 10+ years prior.
