Reflections
Stan Getz | Format: Audio CD

In the midst of his Bossa Nova phase he cut this lp with strings and orchestra going for a more 'pop' feel/audience. When it works it's great, but a few tracks do get a little schmaltzy. Still, the overall presentation is enjoyable.

This is during Miles' peak of trumpeting skill. He had to compete with Dizzy, Clifford and Chet Baker, Kenny Dorham, and many others, and he did. By 1952 he had lost his "baby fat" heard in his early recordings with Bird, but he still didn't know that he was "Miles." Technique, humility, sobriety and happiness make a wonderful combination in a jazz trumpeter.

There are 2 volumes to this Live at the Barrel set, and some other sides with Jimmy Forest. This is a Prestige LP mastered in 1984. Sound quality is pretty good for an amateur live recording from that period. Recommended for Miles bebop fans.

This LP was issued by Savoy a couple of years after Charlie Parker's death and contains several previously unreleased sides.  There is no session information on the jacket.  I can tell that the cut of Groovin' High is with Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet but aside from that who the other musicians are is anyone's guess.

Googling MG12186 reveals Dorham and Bags were on there, but that All Stars band was always changing. And email to Phil Schapp would clear things up.  Nice cover art!

#5390
Japanese Blue Note LP reissue

Part of "The Amazing Bud Powell" 4 volume series. This one is with the young bucks Phillie Joe and PC. Very nice side. More groove, less harmonic innovation than the 40s sides, but very fun.

Live club date from 1951 before West Coast Jazz, and before either was well known.

Organ Sensation!

With the midrange tamed, I pulled out some the music that I built these speakers for. My wife took the kids out to the store to reload the cookie baking ammo so I cranked it up!  Bass horns definitely do work!

Solo performance played on baritone guitar, all original compositions, and a perfect recording made with a gorgeous sounding real 4x8' plate reverb.

CD, excellent recordings, all acoustic instruments and no damn singers
