Lester Young: Prez Conferences

Jazz Records Inc. CD

A collection of Lester Young recordings made from the mid 40s to the late 50s.

It's funny how the lack on SQ on the jazz messengers CD I just posted about really bothered me, but on the Lester Young recordings from the 40s the lack of frequency and dynamic range seem to add to their charm. There is some kind of musical magic in those jazz and big band recordings from the 40s that somehow overcomes their lower fidelity. And in fact in many cases I prefer the original recordings to more modern performances with great SQ like the GRP recording of the new Glenn Miller Orchestra called "In the Digital Mood".

Although I have to admit I do enjoy the performances of the M&Y direct to disc LP "For Duke", so it is not absolute (what in this hobby ever is?  )

Merl Saunders & Friends: Keepers

  Fantasy CD

From Amazon:

"Keyboardist Merl Saunders roamed through the vaults at Fantasy Records in 1997, where he had recorded a voluminous amount of material in the 1970s, and put together this scintillating retrospective. Filled with multi-track remixes of forgotten masters, unreleased gems, restored parts over previously released material, this features Saunders fronting a bunch of different lineups and utilizing the talents of Jerry Garcia, Michael Bloomfield, David Grisman, Tom Fogerty, Vassar Clements, Kenneth Nash, John Kahn and a young Sheila E. Escovedo."

Eric Clapton: Blues

Polydor 2 CD Set

A nice collection of clapton's work from the 70s, but 21 out of the 25 cuts are previously released material, so if you  already have a good amount of 1970s Clapton in your collection look carefully at the track listing before laying out money for this one.

Tom -

Listening to this and tapping my foot like crazy, though that may be because of the Dogfish Head Pumpkin Ale I'm swilling.

First time I've played this since installing your old Classe amp, and the bottom end is tight and bouncy.

Eveything above is joyous.

That CD you have must be crap.

Have a great weekend.
