Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No. 1: Rubinstein/Leinsdorf/Boston Symphony Orchestra

  RCA Living Stereo LP

Great performance by Rubinstein, but unfortunately the SQ on this one is not up to the standards set by some of the earlier RCA recordings done by Richard Mohr and Lewis Layton.

The Power of the Orchestra: Leibowitz/Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

  Chesky 180g LP

I know this is a big fav in audiophile circles, but it never seems to get much play time in my house. Both Rene Leibowitz's readings of Mussorgsky warhorses Pictures at an Exhibition and Night on Bald Mountain and the SQ of this album are good and the SQ, but it just falls behind my two favorite recordings of Pictures, The Ansermet (for delicacy and emotion)  and the Reiner (for dynamics and punch) and as such never sees the platter much at all. Kinda like it was for the shortstop who played back up to Derek Jeter.

The David Chesky Band: Rush Hour

  Columbia LP(Promo copy)

Before he started Chesky Records David Chesky was a studio musician and in 1908 put together this album for Columbia. The band he put together has soome pretty impressive people in it, Bob James, Lou Marini,  Joe Beck and Randy & Michael Brecker to name a few.

The album itself is kind of a big band treatment of smooth jazz.

Rod Stewart: Another Country

A new album of original songs. Rod is now 70 years old, but his voice has not changed much at all since the 70s in spite of having to relearn how to sing after thyroid cancer surgery in 2000.

Nor has he lost his writing chops.

I'm liking this one.

Billy Higgins, Buster Williams. I was hanging out with James a lot during the period when he recorded this. I heard him play the tunes at live gigs many times, with his local Boston band featuring Alan Dawson and John Lockwood. The title track Arioso is fast waltz. They used to play quarter note triplets on the 3/4 which morphed the time into swing 4/4 at 2/3 tempo. They'd play like that for a few minutes then shift back to 3 like a switch. Sometimes they would double time the 4/4, that was really hot. Dawson would play cymbal time with both hands, one on hihat, the other on the ride. He was a very exciting drummer and a great mentor for my brother and me and all of our contemporaries studying jazz in Boston in those 80s and 90s years. James was 14 years older than me, and now I'm 50, the age at which he passed away. He ate a lot of soul food restaurants. He took me to one once, next door to Berklee College. I was a very picky eater back then, they called me Morris. But now I eat anything and I still think that food was disgusting.   James was a great mentor and was instrumental in launching the careers of many young players, Wynton Marsalis, Jeff Keezer, Tony Reedus, Donald Brown, Billy Pierce, me and many others. RIP my friend!

Translucent blue vinyl to go with the LP title!

Nice sounding record. It was warped when I first got it a few years ago, But after sitting in the stack it is now mostly flat and seems quieter than I remember. Good playing, great band, great latin jazz take on bebop standards. Poncho tries to sing, but I skip those tracks.
