Ben Webster: Rare Live Performance 1962

Well this is proof that all vinyl is not gold. THe title says 1962, but the it sounds like a 1940s transcription disc. Given the SQ of things being done by Mercury, RCA & Verve in 1962 I fail to understand why this album sounds like an aircheck from a WWII era radio show. I'm sure glad I only pad $1.99 for it.

The Monkees - Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones Ltd.

Rhino Vinyl Reissue

From avaxhome:
After wresting control of the Monkees from Don Kirschner and recording the very good Headquarters album as a mostly self-contained unit, the band members returned to using studio musicians to augment their sound as well as looking outside the group for the majority of the songs on their fourth album, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. Whatever the reason for the decision, the resulting album is one of their best.

Recording sessions for the album began June 10, 1967 with "Pleasant Valley Sunday" and continued for almost two weeks ending with the recording of "Star Collector" on June 22nd before the band was forced to take a break due to a performance tour. Recording was resumed with a marathon tracking session on August 23rd and a mono mixing session at the Hollywood RCA Studio on September 5th, an overdub session on September 6th, 7th, 9th & 15th and a second mono mixing session on October 4th. The finished LP was released in the USA in November 1967 and a month later in the UK.

Classical Music for Sleep

CD

Dr. Jeffrey Thompson's clinical research with thousands of patients over the years has led to groundbreaking discoveries in how sound frequency patterns built into musical soundtracks can alter states of consciousness and induce states of mind-body healing. This CD contains specifically selected and sequenced Baroque, Romantic and Classical music composed by Holst, Barber, Mendssohn, Elgar, Chopin and others which provide a safe and natural process proven to lead you to rejuvenating states of deep sleep.

I would comment on the SQ, but I nodded off halfway through the first cut........   #-o

Ben Webster: Layin' Back with Ben

  LP

Much better sound than the Rare Live Performances 1962 album, but still not up to the standards set by Verve. This live album sounds like it was recrded by a single (or stereo pair of mike(s) sitting on a table in the back of the room. nice musical performance, but only fair to good SQ.

Ben Webster: Ballads

The best sound of the 3 Ben Webster albums I bought at PREX this week, but the least musically satisfying.(Gee, how unusual is that?  ) It is just not Ben Webster music. It us arranged in front of a string section and rather than the tight jazz I have come to expect from him it is more like Ben Webster plays elevator music.  [-(

Very disappointing.  :(
