Julie London: Julie is Her Name

Real Gone Jazz CD

This is part of set called Julie London: Eight Classic Albums. These are British releases that came about when a bunch of classic Jazz album became public domain in Great Brittan after 50 years. I have several sets from this series and most have decent, although not reference quality sound. Yes I have heard better sounding version, but these 8 album sets are selling for less than most single CDs. They are certainly good enough for the car or my ipod and they give me a chance to hear these albums and then decide which ones are worth perusing in higher quality (and of course higher priced) versions.

I have read that most of the albums in this series were mastered off of other CDs, but several albums in the Julie London set were mastered off of LPs and contain some of the surface noise on those albums. If I picked up a reasonable priced vintage LP with this much surface noise I would not be that upset, but you just don't expect to hear any on a CD. However given what you are getting for the price I still do not think it was a bad purchase.

Does she have a sister?

She might, but considering she would have been 86 today even a younger sister of her's would have been just a bit too old for you.

Trivia - you may also recall her as the actress who play the head nurse Dixie McCall on the TV Series Emergency! in the early 70s.

Excessive surface noise can spoil the listening experience on a recording such as this.  My copy has no visible surface scuffs or scratches, and for the most part it sounds good on my Ortofon Jubilee stereo cartridge.  But there were spots here and there where surface noise would cause a distraction that would take me out of the music.  I'm listening to it now on my Ortofon SPU mono and am completely amazed.  With a stereo cartridge I like to think of the surface noise as being on top of the music.  With a mono cartridge the surface noise is still there, but it is pushed deep into the background to the point where one can barely notice it, if one can notice it at all.
