Yes, Charles feeling better. Last tues, had another 2+ hour outpatient procedure to remove the rest of my
3 cm kidney stone. Stent coming out soon. Still 1-2 times a week physical therapy. Am still tired.
Thanks for your concern Charles.

Just a little tinkering with inexpensive room treatments, pillows, and crossover board/speakers.
The Mimir is blowing me away.

Wow, Steve!  You've had a helluva year.  Getting older is a challenge.  Good to see that you are on the mend.  Kidney stones on top of colon cancer. Oh, my.

Hi Steve,

PI Audio is actually our mostly? retired audio mad scientist, Dave Elledge aka Mr UberBUSS.

We do have a Paul here, but I can't recall his username. I met Paul a couple of years ago when I was visiting the Oceanside area in southern California. Haven't heard from him recently. So Paul, if you are reading this, what's up with you and Beth lately?

You are right Charles. I am performing another experiment; another quality
decoupling cap in my Mimir.

With the cap change in the Mimir, I need to touch up the crossover
and room acoustics to maximize the musical naturalness. Every minute
change requires multiple other "teeter Totter" tweaks with dac, speakers,
room treatments.

Nice that you're feeling better to start experimenting/fine tuning again, Steve. I doubt I would be able to discern the differences on some of those very minor changes you are making involving cap values etc. Hearing and in depth evaluation are learned and valuable skills.

Thanks Nick. Just had a colonoscopy and negative, so none for 3 years.
Kidney stone is now gone after 2nd surgery.

One of the weaknesses of forums is effectively conveying listening experiences.

Please don't sell yourself short Nick. After eliminating so much masking due to
the electronics, I think you would have no trouble perceiving differences.
Its been a true learning experience.

Over the years, there have been others with me, involved in true cutting
edge technology.

I wish distance was not such a factor to audition.

cheers and all the best.

Steve,
I've pretty much had consistent improvement for the last couple of years. So there have been multiple benchmarks for the best sound. So it takes me just a brief time to zero in and each time that happens I do become more aware of subtle differences. It is a continuous learning experience. By nature, I am detail oriented and so that does help in evaluating changes.

When you hear the differences in person, I feel confident you could tell
the difference Nick. Let me put it this way. Although the specs of electronic
components show small changes, deviations occur across the entire audio
realm.
That means every harmonic of a note/voice is influenced. As the harmonic
number increases, the harmonic deviation becomes even more important.

With speakers and rooms, the larger deviations usually cover less than 1/3
octave, which according to Rane, is usually quite benign. It is easier
to obtain deviations over 1/3 octave in the bass region of course.

Another major area is the bloated bass reproduction of using electrolytic
capacitors. Accurate polypropylene capacitors are much tighter in the bass,
dramatically improving the inner detail, including bass, much better.
Of course we must also deal with distortion of other parts, such as resistors
etc.

I would rank the electronic component's importance right up
there with speakers. There is that much improved realism/naturalness.

Cheers and all the best.

Thanks, Steve. Even though I have looked up the definition of an octave, I am not quite clear on what that is. You mentioned harmonics and I am guessing that is the same as the word texture that I use.One area I have not really focused on is bass response. Not important enough for me to pursue the lower/lowest registers. At some point, I will evaluate via a mic and software and use DSP to fix. I am not certain though if that range is fixable via DSP

Hi Nick,

Maybe good to cover some info/def for others as well Nick.

I hope this helps all.

An octave higher concerning frequency is 2 times of frequency.
An octave lower concerning frequency is 1/2 of frequency.
I will use only higher below.

An octave higher is twice of, say, 20hz is 40hz.
1/3 octave would be ~6.6hz

100hz would be 200hz
1/3 octave would be ~33.3hz

5k hz would 10k hz
1/3 octave would be ~1665hz

An octave lower than 20hz would be 10hz etc.

Now, with 1khz fundamental, 1.5k would not be a harmonic.

Harmonics are what gives an instrument/voice its individuality, its
particular characteristics.

For instance, the 2nd harmonic of 1k fundamental frequency is 2khz.
the 3rd harmonic of 1khz is 3khz
4th harmonic is 4khz
5th harmonic is 5khz etc, eetc.

For instance, suppose we compare a trumpet to a violin, same
1khz note.

The 2nd harmonic amplitude of each instrument will be different.
The same with the 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc etc. The difference in
amplitudes of the harmonics gives each instrument its
distinctiveness.

Take Cal Tech's Music Lab survey, James Boyk. One can see
the harmonic structure of some different instruments.

https://www.tnt-audio.com/casse/life_above_20khz.pdf

I hope this helps all.
