Mike Schultz is supposed to host the October Rave.
Mike is your mother inlaw going to be gone by then ?
Under the schedule above, maintained by Barry, the date is listed as Oct 29.

Understood but just checking because I know Mike has his mother inlaw sleeping in his stereo room
Yup should be OK-
TMI alert: She is having knee replacement surgery Oct 10 and then off to rehab and then were not exactly sure but we should be fine for the 29th.
Anyone have a theme? I was thinking of reaching out to the fellow that Joe says is an Evolution Acoustics dealer in PA (Barry I think) to see if he can bring those much-raved about MMminione speakers. Not sure if they have been released yet though.
Joe - Did you ever hear from Barry about these?
Otherwise my setup has been kinda stagnant, but sounding vgood to me, w/ the new opamps in the EE DAC and new tubes (that don't seem to fry each other) in the VAC pre.
We always seem to have a good time anyway, rain  or shine.
Works for me. I can bring an Uberbuss and associated Triode Lab power cords to demo.
May have the new Lenehan S2 speaker by then.

I'll have to think on that one... Raves that have too much of a commercial bent to them aren't really what I'm after.
If I was I'd call either my brother or father, who both own audio stores, to set up demos of their gear.
I had some guys show up at one of my Raves once and they proceeded to commandeer one of the two rooms with some Zu speakers and amps and source that they sell, turning my house into their showroom for a day. That was weird.
I remember one Rave at Toprounds where several people were running around trying to get you to buy stuff that they represented and it was truly distateful, I thought.
OK I thought about it Charles and I'd love to hear the Uber in my system, and the Lenehans if they come in.
I already have a Triode Lab cable but it might be cool to hear what more could do.
But I'd rather not take my system apart right away, so please understand if we want to swap the things you brought in and out.
Thanks

Don't know you "sell". Bargains to be had?
Yup Charles that's what swayed me after I mulled it over (after a long day at work so I apologize if my tone was bitchy). You are an Us and it was the Thems that annoyed me at past Raves.
I am very eager to hear the Uber! My house is relatively out in the country and we are the only house on the transformer. When we had lines torn down by branches the repairman asked if I had some sort of home business 'cause he'd never seen powerlines so thick to a residence. So it'll be intersting to hear if the Uber makes a diff for my (non-dedicated) outlets.

Hah...I remembered those raves. The resultant sound was not even impressive, then of course the blame fell on the room, blah blah.
As for the one at Topround
I hope I can make this one...your raves are usually a good time.
Well I'll link to this thread from the "Schedule Post" and make this the official October Rave thread ;)

Hi Putz,
I'm 5 min south from Exit 12 off of Rt 78.
20 min west of 78/287 intersection.
Hope you can make it.

EWR is the three-letter code defined by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to designate Newark Liberty International Airport. Kennedy is JFK, LaGuardia is LGA, those I understand. How Newark Airport ended up being EWR is a mystery to me. :-k

I'm just off exit 26 in Branchburg, so I'm pretty close by. I'll have to check but I may be able to make it.
Max, now that you've divulged your location, you have one less excuse for not showing up  Seriously, hope you can stop by. My wife works in Bburg, off of Harlan School...
I have to start putting the room back together today (mother-in-law moved out for surgury yesterday).
If anyone needs directions, please PM me. I have a feeling that the Yahoo group knows how to get here already so that means may not be effective for directions.
My wife Sharen is of course bugging me to start getting a head-count, so if anyone does plan on coming please let us know.
More info to follow (room, system etc.)
Foliage should be good this year.

QuoteHey Mike, did you ever get in touch with Barry?
Nope haven't called yet
I'm bored so I'd like to post a little info about what to expect - Nothing new for those who've been here but hopefully we'll have some fresh meat faces for this GTG-
HT room: I have a kinda modest HT setup in a 18 x 19' ish room - midrange Marantz receiver, PS3, 58" plasma, nice B&W inwalls (3 in front and 3 in back), small Velodyne sub. So we can check out BluRays etc, so if you have some concerts that'd be fine. I just got the LOTR BluRay set if anyone is interested - the sound is super.
At Raves we usually set up an ad-hoc system in this room, completely separate from the HT gear. I can provide a Forte preamp and if Tommy brings Digital Amp Co goodies for the other room we'll have an extra amp too. So this room is ideal if anyone wants to bring monitors, sources, integrateds whatever. In past years it's been fun to hear how these systems morph throughout the day and end up sounding really sweet by the evening.
2-channel room: Smaller room (13 x 17') dedicated to stereo only. Von Schweikert VR4 MKI, VAC Standard MKII pre, Digital Amp Co Cherry Plus w/ super duper 1800 watt transformer Class D amp, Squeezebox Touch, Eastern Electric DAC (original but w/ boffo op-amps), ProJect Perspective Carbon TT w/ ProJect Tube Box SE phono pre.
I'd like to leave this system intact for just a little bit so folks can hear it, but then who knows? Depends on what shows up. I'm certainly open to cables (XLR or RCA) or power cords. Hopefully Rollo can bring the UberBuss - interested to hear it on powerful Class D amp. The room is very well treated, most would say way too overdamped, but I like it that way - you get the clearest sound and best imaging w/out all that damn echo slappin' around. I'll try to borrow an SACD player so bring SACDs. And my TT is working fine so if want to hear vinyl...
House - We just got a new roof yesterday, and since it cost at least 2 pr of really nice speakers, everyone notice!
2 nice but big-ish dogs, and they will beg. Sorry 'bout that.
There are speakers on the deck, which if nice we can enjoy.
Extras - I'm hoping Tommy will have the RMAF Cherry Ultra Monos in hand. It'll be fun to have 1200+ (?) or so watts per side.
Hopefully Charles Rollo will have the Lenehan ML-2 (Manhattan maybe?) speakers. I do not have speaker stands for monitors.
As always we'll play it by ear and have a great time.
If anyone has any CD that I simply must hear bring it and we can rip to the server. Laptop will be here so if you want to bring a thumbdrive...
Still looking for headcount so if you think you are coming please let me know.
Wives more than welcome (hint hint for Mrs. Pumpkinman to show) and we can even keep kids happy w/ a trampoline and rope swing.

I just had a nice chat with the other Barry (Transparent Music Systems) who's an Evolution Acoustics dealer. The much-raved about MMmicroones are due in mid-Nov., so they won't be available for the Rave. :(
But :) he expressed an interest in having people over to his place when they are in and broken in. He apparently has a killer killer (yes 2x) reference system to show off.
I sent him an invite to the Rave anyway but I think he's busy, but I encouraged him to keep in touch with the group and he seemed pleased to be kept in the loop. Nice fella.

50% chance I make it, having an ambsurg procedure the 21st, (I hate getting old).
If you would like I can bring over a Technics SP 25 turntable with the Kuzma Stogi Reference arm.
Should be finished setting it up by the end of the week.
Don't know how it will sound but I could imagine not too shabby.

If you want to go through the trouble of bringing, we could probably get it set up but the shelf it would go on is only 15" front to back, so the feet might not fit.
Also, my lps are from the high school and college daze and so they are pretty rooted, so best to bring some clean vinyl too.
Wifey is still looking for some idea of headcount, please everyone let us know if you are planning on coming. Or No Soup For You!
I forgot that I'll be able to borrow speaker strands from Bro's store, so that should be no prob if monitors want to visit.

OK - colonoscopy done, clean bill of health in hand, I'm in.
A few folks have asked me about the EAR 834P phono pre, should I bring it?
PLEASE
Can someone bring a nice (hopefully tube) preamp?
My VAC is eating its 12AX7s again. I spoke w/ VAC about it and they said that it leans on them pretty hard (used as cathode followers I think Brent said, and I read that 12AX7s are not a good choice for this). But now I don't get more than a few weeks on a new set so it's got to go back. Bought some Chinese tubes, which is what VAC sells, but one started to get noisy after only a week.
Right now it's only a barely noticable "tearing" sound, almost like vinyl groove noise. But in a week who knows. Because of this I have some good single AX7s around and have mixed them before and it sounded fine.
But just in case, if someone could bring a back-up...
Thanks
QuoteA few folks have asked me about the EAR 834P phono pre, should I bring it?
Right now my TT is several meters from my pre (and I use long Monster cable to get there, eeewww) but we could likely move stuff around to make whatever work however.
It's been done before. (Walking aound Topround's living room during a Rave is like playing Twister!)
I'll be bringing Jim back his JJ Elektra pre so we can also use that

I'll be there too, with my 17 year old son if that's OK. I could bring my highly modded Supratek pre (line and phono) if you'd like. I've rebuilt the power supply with Lundahl iron and PP caps, made an upgraded umbilical cable and put a bybee music rail on the heaters since I brought it to Toprounds house earlier this year. Seems like there are quite a few preamps already offered, however, so let me know.

Somehow the last couple of times my GPS got me to Mike's place alright . Your GPS must have been made in China :duh? Incidentally, I was out west in Sept. (Oregon, flying into Portland). We had 2 Garmins, and we had so much problem around the airport area. We'd be on a highway (a major one to say), that old lady inside would come up with "Arriving at Destination". Couple of years ago, I went on assignment to somewhere south of Portland also. When came back to Portland on the night before departure, looking for my hotel at the airport, the old lady said "Arriving at Destination" again, about another mile away from the hotel..... Don't trust too much those old ladies in the box .
Yes, I had updated before the trip(s).

Nothing's wrong star-gazing to gauge your position. That's why you're more accurate than the damn Garmin. I sent them complaints, and they still came back with "Nothing's wrong with our simulation over here...." Go figure. Incidentally, when we go lost in Portland, we ended up by the Adidas corporate complex, and some lady from the parking lot took us to the right spot (we followed her car). Just as good as GPS.

Hey Jim,
Think I said the Garmin has no problem with getting to Mike's place. It leads right up to the turn into the "alley" to his house. Strange thing was the last couple of times - once it took me from the Interstate to his place; then, the last time (last year!) somehow it took me from the other side (back side), via local roads more. I didn't purposely took a specific turn, just went according to the woman in the Garmin.... Likely the updates did it to me. But.... out west last August was a different story. I did the latest updates of course, still the satellites misfired.
Hey Mike can you send out your adress again
So Mike, what's the condition of your road these days? Is it safe for sports-cars on stiff lowered suspensions, or should I take my beater out to your place?
Barry,
The road is fine - I have no problem getting my Miata in and out, so long as you are just a little bit careful.
My bigger worry would be with the weather.
I ordered 58 and sunny but will get 40 and snowy :duh
I guess we'll have a fire going in the wood stove.
Preamps:
My VAC has been working fine for the past week, so while we could certainly swap something in if needed/desired, I don't want to have 10 people taking their systems apart to bring their pre's that might not get used.
Cables:
Would love to hear some different XLRs. I ordered some Audioquests but I don't have them yet.
World's Best Pie:
Sorry, but the place we got it from can't get them anymore. They tried to bake their own but the imposters were a poor substitute.
Weather:
It wouldn't be an October Rave without crappy weather, and here we go again.

Sorry for the late notice but I guess I was in disbelief that we are actually going to get 6 or so in of snow!!
There is already an inch on the ground (we're at 800' elevation) and its sticking to the roads, which will be icy due to the warmed road surface.
If people can please pass the word via telephone that'd be a big help!
Tentative date? How about next Sat?
Sorry again guys
Rave is postponed
Next Saturday
Next Saturday is good
Revised forecast? :thumb:
Wanted this appear on this page too:

Next Saturday works for me.
What about all that food?
Well I got the message just as I went from the subway to the Ferry Station, so just in time.
Back home now, and about to stuff myself with bread-pudding I was bringing.
Not sure if I can make it next week...
Next Saturday is a good call, though I'll be in FL.
Sticking here in SE PA.
Yeah, coming down like a SOB in Branchburg. I'll have to get back to you on next Saturday, may have something already planned.
Martin - Sorry for the late notice and I hope it wasn't too bad of an inconvenience
No problem Mike, the weather is nobody's Mistress.
Really messy out there. Rain beginning to turn to flurries here.
Got me a lotta new music to audition, so this is perfect weather for hunkering down and watching the tubes glow. :thumb:
I'm bummed, but in South Whitehall, PA we already have trees bent to the ground and they are saying we could get a FOOT of snow! I was up until 5AM building a pair of Cherry MONO PLUS BLK amps. They are done and sound AMAZING!!!! I will be playing them hard during the week so they'll be fully broken in by the rave. :)

A bummer for all, especially for the Host. Weather sucks.

It's a wise decision, Mike, so Martin can stuff himself with his pudding
Martin, don't let that be your excuse for not bringing more next week. What better to do, Martin, than to listen to music when it's so quiet outside (the street having nobody walking around!) and fresh food, pal! aa  :-({|= Enjoy!!!!!!!!

Merry Xmas Everybody !!!
Probably best it was cancelled
Wise it was "postponed".
Martin already has his thumb raised :thumb:. All that pudding in one tummy; yum!!!!!!!!!!! ](*,)
So Mike , how much snow did you get ?
We got about 3-4 inches of heavy wet snow by me, lots of branches down, power went out at about 10 last night, and hasn't come back yet. Gotta love a smart phone at times like this ;)
Just heard on the radio, West Milford 19". But, I guess that's CT? not Mike's Milford NJ!? :D
Amended - it is indeed in NJ. Question still - is it by Mike? :duh
I had at least 6", power went out Saturday, a call to JCPL gets a message that says, "most customers won't have power restored until well into the week". Considering I have an electric stove, well water with an electric pump, and heat that doesn't go on without electricity, that sucks!

Sorry to learn of your plight!
Maybe Mike lost his power too.
Just got in and the BBC is reporting that many parts of the NE USA has lost power, some three million homes, plus 6 people dead.
And I won't be able to make it next week.
Maybe Mike should make his annual rave the X-mas rave, take over from Phil.
The leaves haven't even left the trees yet. Add a foot of snow to that and it's no wonder tress came down and power is out. This has got to be worse than the hurricane we got earlier in the year.
Local utility companies are getting a 1-2 punch this year, for sure.
We lost power at 1:15 pm Saturday. Still out. Generator I bought in August is keeping us warm and basement dry.
Can't believe school was open today. So many streets are closed due to downed trees and power lines.
Finally checking my emails and internet at the office and saw that I lost my Fantasy Football matchup by one point. Oh the Humanity!

This morning I was up by the old Plaza Hotel square area. North of there is that gold statue, surrounded by trees. All the trees around that statue had at least the top 1/3 all "sawed" off (why didn't they just take all the trees out?), not just some smaller limbs. WOW!!!!!!!!!!! then, I walked west along Central Park South. Many more branches on the ground.
Man, "winter" is NOT here yet for another month! March? Start dreaming and praying!!!!!!!!!
Damn that global warming! All of you must switch to I-pods, immediately!
Hi all,
I lost power at exactly 1:00 pm on Saturday when the rave was supposed to start and there's no sign of getting it back soon.
Writing this on wifeys iPad from my brothers house.
We got at leat 12 inches, measured the morning after.
Lines down all over
Can't have a rave unless the pwr is on by sat. Let's hope
I like the holiday rave idea. We should pot luck it to make it $$$ neutral t the host
Glad to hear that you're OK Mike.
Glad you're doing ok Mike, still no power at my place too...
Pot-luck rave sounds like a very fair proposal, and a good idea :D

+1, so that it's not too burdensome, at least $$-wise, on the host. The atmosphere is better perhaps. It may require a little more coordinating though, as we don't want to end up with tons of potato chips and no dipping......
Power came back lat night at 3:32am, hopefully it'll still be on when I get home from work...

Still no power at my house in Bridgewater. 4 schools are closed today in town due to no power. What happened to prioritizing restoration? Probably just as well because most people with kids have abandoned their homes for hotels or relatives. My street is just us and one other family with a generator going. All the other houses are pitch black.
Still no power in Branchburg, either. Just the wood stove for heat and the BBQ grill for cooking. My neighbor brought home a generator and I ran a looong extension cord to it to keep the fridge going. Of course my highest priority was getting the stero running, but the wife had other ideas....

Hmmmm.
So how does the HiFi sound with a home generator produced electricity?
I see a possible business opportunity here. Buy a generator from The Home Depot. Cryo this, gold plate that. Replace the outlets with some Furutech or Oyaide ones and sell to audiophiles for 3 times the price :thumb:

Just heard on the radio, still another day before Jerseyans have power back..... Good luck, Mike. :thumb:
Got this message last nite from head of Bridgewater Schools system: The best I can offer is that JCP&L has stated that they will not be in the area until Thursday. We are pushing hard for them to be here sooner.
Needless to see we are still out at our house. Starting to enjoy that buzz I'm getting refilling the generator 3 times a day. Now I know what Frank Booth was talking about.
Well, the neighbor's generator died last night so back to nothin'.

A friend in Randolph, NJ just e-mailed, they got power back. They've been hauling water from the basement out for several days now. They couldn't find a generator in their desperation over the last few days..... Randolph is near Morristown I guess. So, I can guess it's getting better. Just hang in there, guys!

How is the power situation?
Seriously Mike, Rave or not, I hope you've got power back!
No power yet. Down 5 days w/ Irene and now 5 w/ this one.
On top of that, I found out last week that basically our entire dept in the US is being liquidated (I mean moving to India and China)
I guess I'm lucky in that I have until Mar-2013 before I am led out the door. Some folks got only 6 months but hey that's better than many get.
So it's find a new job time, What Fun!!
As far as the Rave goes, I just can't commit to this Sat w/out power, sorry. Maybe if we get pwr tonite I can can convince Sharen to still do it Sat but the house is not ready after living by flashlight for a week.

Hang in there bro. Candles are more romantic. :)
Wow! That really is pretty bad news! Do you get a package if you stay the 18 months? If you do, it may be worth it to stick it out, the economy may have improved somewhat by then, making the job prospects better. I really hope it works out well for you Mike.
Best, Barry
Sorry to hear about that Mike
On the rave front , don't go crazy about this weekend. We can always schedule it for a better time.

So So sorry to hear that Mike. Why do bad things happen to good people. It's simply not fair
All The Best..........Bill
Wow... living by candle light/flashlight for a week, sounds like camping.
Mike, is your heating via gas or????
Perhaps serious thought should be given to rescheduling the rave for December, since Emil is hosting one in a couple weeks.
Sharen and Yourself and the Others might need some time getting used to electricity again when ever it comes back on.
We (NYAR) should have a suggested donation for the raves, its a lot of work to host a bunch of people, not to mention the expense. And some of us (myself inc.) live in apts. that are too darn small (tiny in my case  ) to host anything. I'm more than willing to contribute something to offset costs... plus I always bring a bottle of wine.
Thanks for the kind thoughts gents, truly appreciated :thumb:
And it has been decided by a power greater than myself:
No Rave this Saturday, 05-Nov
But we would like to do something for the hoilidays, so let's all keep that in mind (guaranteed to snow then too!)
I keep thinking about friggin Deepak who has his flippin Rave in frackin January and it was like 70 degress and were hangin out in his front yard in Tshirts!

Sorry to hear of the work situation, Mike. As such, what's on everyone's mind now is not the Rave, but your well-being. Just CANCEL that for the time being. We'll now concentrate on being pesty on Emil.
What did so much damage this time I'm sure it's because those darn trees still have leaves on, and the heavy snow just made it even heavier on the trees, and hence the devastation.
Cheer up. Should there be anything we can do to help, just let us know! :thumb:

Wow, so sorry to hear about your misfortune. Hopefully you're have job oppurtunites elsewhere.
Don't worry about the Rave that's secondary!
Good Luck!
Joe
Sorry to hear the troubles Mike, but it is everywhere.
My group got outsourced to Pune last year while I was in the middle of a divorce, now there's a 1-2 punch you can do without. I got 3 months severance. Luckily, it only took 4 months to find a position.
But, now employed in a better position, (though pays less), and I can actually enjoy my home w/o the added stress of the ex.
What I'm saying is, keep your head up, it will get better.
And buy batteries in bulk. ;)
Sorry to hear about the job situation, Mike.
If it helps, I'm still without power too! Living by flashlight sucks! I do have a wood stove for heat but the house is starting to smell like a campsite with all that wood burning, it's going to take some serious airing out - hope we get some nice weather after the power comes back (whenever that may be!).
Just heard from the wife - Power's back on!
I think a serious listening session is in order for tonight...
Hey Mike sorry to hear about your job. If I can help you in ANY way please ask.

Good luck Jerseyites with your remaining power woes. We were out for 4 days after the hurricane. Not a fun time at all.
Mike, hope the job situation turns around for you. Everything happens for a reason I believe and there are better things on the horizon for you, I'm sure.
Mike - hope your power is restored soon...
Good Luck with your future endeavors... remember it is always easier to find a new job when you currently have a job... start looking now!
Like BobM says, "Everything happens for a reason"... it's destiny & a destiny you can help steer!
Cheers,
Pete
Mike,
I just stumbled on this thread and found out about your job situation. Really sorry to hear it; at least you have 18 months to find another position. The pharma industry is just getting worse and worse. Don't worry about the rave, hang in there, and good luck to you.

I have a friend who used to work for Ciba-Geigy (something like that), and got laid off twice. He just got turned off, and now going around to sell real estate, which is not exactly the place to be. It's just damn capitalism at its best and meanest. These pharmas are "doing" drugs in cheap places. I recently noticed that one of my prescription "drugs" was made in India.... There you have the answer. So, we now have the Wall St. uprising. That also is happening for a good reason perhaps.....
Good luck Mike. Does your present (still) company provide any job replacement counseling or assistance.....?

Great news!
Mike,
Glad the power is back. As for the job, American companies put no premium on loyalty anymore. It's too bad and will cause problems down the road. Fortunately you have great science skills and are very personable. These should stand you well in the job search. Good luck!!
Jim
Hey Mike, no pressure, but any chance of this happening in the next few months?
Yeah, now that Topround got AudioNotitis I was thinking maybe March but we are having some company for the SBowl so I don't want to plan much past that. Domestic harmony and all that stuff...
If someone beats me to the punch, so be it...
It can still snow in March anyway
