Title: Chris "Lonewolf" Becker Honorary Rave 1/24/15 1-6 PM
Post by: Emil on December 17, 2014, 09:18:50 AM
Looking to get the old gang together for a nice day honoring Lonewolf.

As we know, Chris has not made his presence here or over at AC for some time so I will throwing this Rave in his honor.
http://www.audionervosa.com/index.php?topic=5058.0

Made some changes since you guys were last here.
The Maggie 3.6, McCormack amp and Wyred DAC1 are out. Quicksilver 300B  DIY Cornscala and Lampizator Gen4 are in and I'm digging it :thumb:

Whats a Cornscala? Its the bottom half of a Klipsch Cornwall mated with the top half of a Klipsch Lascala. The idea was to combine the strength's of each while eliminating their weaknesses. There is nothing Klipsch about the Cornscala; just the idea.
This is how the Cornscalas began life as:
http://www.critesspeakers.com/cornscala-style-b.html

I painted, stained and pretty much gutted about 70% of it replacing drivers  crossovers and internal wiring

I'll post pictures later......

Please RSVP

(//)Hi all,   Looks like I could make it.
Have not seen many of you in a while.   Happy Holidays!
I spoke with Emil about bringing some relatively new speakers I am working with and enjoying, to set up in the upstairs room.
They are the Ryan R-610 monitors, definitely a fun speaker.
I have stands for them as well.
I will also bring the newest issue Wyred 4 Sound amp:
as it plays well with this speaker, and some other gear for that system, not sure what yet  :).    Looking forward to hearing Emil's latest version of the RockScala, and getting together with y'all.

And I hope Lonewolf comes by too!      -Neil

Looking forward to hearing Emil's latest version of the RockScala

They do do rock very well but they are not a one trick pony [-X
and I  think you'll be surprised how these big boxes handle the finer genres of music as well as how they can disappear into the room.

They sound nothing like the last time you were over

Not too late to wish y'all Season's Greetings yet, and a happy and healthy new year, with this fine tune.

hahahaha,, The Roast of the Ghost Lonewolf. Unless Chris is there, I'd rather have have roast beef, roast pork, roast anything other than a ghost.  :wtf: ;)

Yep, just 1 Satfrat award and I retired from Rave after receiving it. Not because that was the pinnacle audio achievement mind you. I simply filed for bankruptcy, retired on a fixed income and just can't afford to do much of anything anymore.

But I have to hand it to Chris, while I still lurk & linger, he just up and cold turkeyed from the audio world, doesn't even answer emails. Chris has my respect both  before & after. I wish I could be there to pay my respects. Party on guys. :thumb:

Cheers,
Robin

Yeah, it's hard to believe that he went totally cold turkey, after being so involved with so many audiophiles and audio sites for so long.

Maybe he's lurking somewhere working on a new hobby?

Or maybe he just realized that he is retired, on a fixed income, and doesn't want the temptation to spend money that we present anymore.

We all know that whatever he's doing, the music is still playing and he has enough gear and tunes to float him until the end of time. He has been sitting on the throne of "hifi final destination" for many years. His joy in this hobby was giving to others. His son says he's fine, that's all that matters to me. I miss him, of course, but I don't choose to feel abandoned, I prefer to believe he has found another way of giving to others that is more satisfying to him.

That's exactly how I feel. Thanks to his son, I know Chris is doing well in his new Pa digs and just because Chris has chosen another path, it doesn't change the kinda guy he is. I can't think of another dude that deserves an honorary Rave more than Chris, he's more than earned the honor IMHO. He's a friend forever,,,  :thumb:

On one hand....you could say it was a classy move to just bow out, stage left, and not create some big drama thread that would have looked like a big pity party.

OK, guys, I'm getting rid of some junk.  I still have likely 100+ LPs.  So I want to make room.  I stopped cleaning up with my analog LP things several years ago.  So, at this Rave, perhaps I can bring them around and lay them on the floor for a "finders keepers" round?  They pretty much are easy listening and classical recordings.  No punk, hard rock, metal, disco, doo-up.  I stopped buying LPs like around the time Donna Summer was hitting it big.

The vinyls are in very good say I'd say, except for jacket wear and tear.  Some may even have not been "needled".  Easy listening like Henry Mancini, Mantovani even, even may be Beatles.  Some country/folk, like Joan Baez.  Classical mostly are orchestral (not too many Chamber) and opera (recitals and Puccinis....).

Will there be any interest? :duh

Shek laid some LPs on me about 4 years ago, they are all in excellent condition. Mostly classical, very good titles. Thanks Shek!

The vinyls are in very good say I'd say, except for jack wear and tear.

:duh

Damn!!!!!!!!!! I jumped my gun, didn't I?  With the way things are these days, after "serious" consideration, I took several offers already.  That's because if I bring them and lay them in Emil's living room, there may be casualties even, as vinyl is celebrating its big renaissance these days.  I did toy with the idea of going back, buying one of those cheap TT offered recently on Audio Advisor, with a composite arm and even a cartridge.  I heard the composite arm at an VPI event couple of years ago, and I was really impressed with the sound from it.... Or, wait more yet, since 3D printing is the rage now, print my own tonearm....  Nah!

Well, see what other dirt I may dig up next!

Done DEAL!

Started to box 'em.  There's at least 3-4 45 RPM LPs.  Does your TT play 45?  Should play 33/45?  No 78's, mind you .  I had them at one time, believe it or not, when I was like converting them for a piano teacher, good Schnabel recordings.... if you heard of that guy.  Oh, Buddy has 78s.... Now I'm left with the Chinese ones; what'm I going to do with them?  You don't want them?   :duh :duh :duh

'nuf rambling.  Oh, also still have a box of 7" 45s (vs the LP mentioned above).  These are mainly "hit" 45s from the 60's, 70's, 80's?  I'd say 40-50 of them?  Anyone interested, if not Pete?

Update:  Damn!!!!!!!!! I think we now are heading to the 300 count.  I'm going to get a hernia out of this.  I'll have to figure out how to get them loaded into the car.  I have to break 'em up into small packages.  The damn McDonald McNugget box is getting toooo big/heavy.  It now alone must have like 150 albums in there now (a 2nd one I counted 80 already).

Let me look into hiring a coolie to haul them.

Does anyone still play with Laser Discs?  I still have several.  I got rid of the Marantz LD player several years ago, so.... I have to also take care of the LDs now.  Guess they're like cassettes or 8-track cartridges.  Any taker?  Lawrence of Arabia, etc... classic, except on a forgotten medium..... and others.

From the National Weather Service

Snow likely before noon, then snow and freezing rain between noon and 3pm, then a chance of rain and snow after 3pm. High near 33. Light and variable wind becoming north 11 to 16 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

Doesnt look good. Lets see what they predict tomorrow and if things dont change, I may have to postpone :(

Thru various sources (radio, TV...) since last evening, it's going to be like 1-3" around the NYC LI areas, more in the outskirts, N & W of NYC here especially.  Turning into Sleet/rain tomorrow afternoon.  Going to be not so much fun driving for those driving from afar.

This is the best time to listen to music when it is cold and quiet outside.  As a tribute, I hooked up my McIntosh MC60 tube mono amps.  I just discovered KT88s has lush mids...again.

I won't be able to attend but I want to chime in to give my best to Chris.  I'm sorry about your wife's health issues; hopefully you'll get a miracle.  Barring that I wish you both the best with the time you have.

See, Senore Emil, should have had the Rave to avoid the storm .

Seriously, as of 6 a.m., on radio and TV, the storm didn't seem to turn out as they forecast it to be.  6" in Central Park, NJ on I-287 west of here the highway was pretty much "black", with only small white strips on either side and the center.  Carle Place 5"?..... The storm shifted east, so Smithtown area is supposed to be harder-hit.  But.... we still have another half a day for mother nature to dump on us; more dumping is yet to come?  It may turn out that they (at least the weatherperson) jumped the gun a little again! :duh

Unfortunately, 1 youngster was killed snowboarding?  He hit a light pole. ](*,)

Yeap, the weatherman was wrong again.  Why?  The governor of NJ is reported to be mad at the botched forecast.

I awoke to not much snow at all. maybe 4 to 6 inches,my car had hardly any snow on it at all. Maybe the wind drove it off.
My son snow blowed our driveway and the sidewalks off in about 20 minutes!
I think a lot of places are preemptively closed for today.

Yep they got it wrong again.
Unfortunately snow storms are now political, so they will posture all the time that the world is ending, then do the backpedal we are seeing on the news right now, until the one day they get it right, then they will say " ah Ha" I was right, please vote for me again!
Its a crap shoot, with the scenarios already planned out no matter what happends.

Well, we know weather forecast is not an exact science.  Understandable.  Yeap, it's gotten political alright, esp. with your governor, the way he can get ticked off so easily .  Well, this is also a political statement?  Me no runnin for president tho. :duh

I guess it was our turn out here on Long Island. All summer we have those big rain storms where we get next to nothing while half of New Jersey is floating down a river and out to sea.I am looking at 18 - 24 inches now with talk of up to another foot on the way by days end. One of the problems with weather forecasting in this area is because of our proximity to the ocean coast conditions can be dramatically different a) form area to area and B) if the track of a storm changes. In a land locked area if a storm changes track by 20 or 30 miles it doesn't change the outcome much, but a 20 -30 mile change along the coast can make the difference between a storm losing steam over land or picking up moisture and intensity over the sea. Also the TV reports out of NYC cover such a wide range of area that what is bad in one section of the coverage area may not hit another at all. Such was the case today. While Mike got next to nothing in NJ, Long Island got hammered, with a big difference between eastern and western LI.

As for me, I have three fireplaces in the new house, a 9 kW generator in the garage, just in case, and yesterday I loaded up on all the essential (like a case of our favorite wine, Be Prepared (http://images.zaazu.com/img/Boyscout-boy-scout-scout-neckerchief-smiley-emoticon-000692-small.gif) ), so I am ready to ride it out in style.  :D

Emil,

You've missed your chance to have the bare-chested, screw winter Rave.  Of course I'm so well-insulated, it wouldn't have bothered me one bit   We also could have had the maximum shrinkage contest ala George Costanza.  Oh well maybe next year.

Since Emil started a new thread for the new date, I'll lock this thread to help keep the confusion to a minimum.

Emil, If you like I can merge the threads and be sure the title has the right date(?)

Just send me a PM ;)
