I find one of the biggest challenges in my basement is trying to achieve good imaging at all volume settings. I see a whole lot of room pics with different acoustic treatments. But i never seem to hear about how these speaker placements and treatments effect the volume for imaging. I am an image freak so this is paramount. I am about to start some acoustic paneling i think volume settings are where its at for a strategy. But i am a newbie with paneling so help me out....

If the setup is right, the speakers are not stressed, and the room is treated properly, the imaging should not change at different volumes.

Is it cheaper to treat for the sweet spot or do i need to panel for the whole room?

Thanks Bryan

Where do you listen?  That's where you need to treat for.

Hi

I have my system in the corner and the speakers pointing towards the center of the room. I own a ht 3 seater chair unit. I have them about 1/3 in and sort angled to the corner. I should take a pic.

One of the best things I ever did for my imaging was to  nail down my speaker placement using the in phase/out of phase tracks on the Sheffield Test disc. Movements of as little as a 1/4 inch (6.35 mm to you guys  :D) made big differences in both soundstage size and locational focus. I thought I had it sounding pretty good just doing it by evaluation random changes and trying to stumble onto the right spot, but when I used the step by step changes with the test disc, it guided me to the best spot and when I hit it, everything just locked into place.   :yay2:

Which Sheffield Test disc are you referring to? There were a few of them when I googled.

Barry,

I looked at what was on google and I don't see the one I have. The Reference Recordings/XLO disc is similar and has the same in/out of phase tracks, but my disc is not gold. I am at work tonight, but will take a look on the shelf when I get home and get you the exact title.

The one I have is the "Sheffield / XLO Test & Burn in CD" It is listed on Amazon at:

http://www.amazon.com/Sheffield-Xlo-Test-Burn-CD/dp/B000025RLX/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1289962512&sr=1-1

Used copies can be had for under $10

There is also a Reference Recordings/XLO disc which is a gold CD. It has different music tracks but from what I can see on the contents listing on Amazon, the first few tracks are the same kind of in-phase.out of phase tests (although I have never heard this disc myself , so I can't know for sure

That is the one. When that out of phase signal comes from "all around the room" the imaging result is great. As a Pipedream owner imaging plays a key part to my listening pleasure.
   a no brainer.

If the imaging/soundstaging changes with volume then you are probably getting some untreated bounce from sidewalls or front/back walls. It's a sure sign that you need some treatments.

(then again, our SO's continue to say we all need "treatment", no doubt  :-({|=)
