Bad enough I'm in the middle of a divorce, but my company, an EHR software vendor, was acquired by another firm a few months back, and last Friday I got the dreaded call.

Seems I'm too high up the pay scale for my position for the new company to 'keep me'. I'm sure they'll be replacing me with someone lower on the pay scale shortly.

Still, they have offered me a decent buy out, I'm good till mid-February.

And my wife asked the lawyer to stop the divorce proceedings so she can cover me under her health insurance till I get a new position, that was a 'stand-up' thing for her to do.

So it could be worse I suppose. And to make this post relevant to AN, I'll have more time to tweak my system. I still have to swap stock fuses in my amp with cryo-ed silver-ceramic ones to see if I hear a difference, guess I can swap them to my heart's content now.

Still, it does bite.

Unfortunately, welcome to the club Gene.

Now you see why I have time to build crossovers, power cords, build decks, patios, rock walls ....... watch Christmas trees grow.

That's cool of your wife.  But would you not be covered under COBRA?

Bummer Gene, and good luck!

@ TMT, Cobra isn't free, or even cheap ;)

That can depend on your company.  I had 6 months of coverage free, and then lucky enough for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act reduction, which I don't think is in effect now.

You have to pay for Cobra. Sorry to hear that Gene

Thanks all.

I believe COBRA is quite pricey. I think it would have been $800ish monthly for me, and as my son was staying with me post-divorce, a family plan would have been insane. That was my concern, covering my son. I expressed my concern to my wife, hoping she'd be able to cover him, which she did. Never expected her to add me as well.

It would have been around that for me and my wife too Gene.  I was extremely lucky with my company offer and the timing.

Gene, sorry to hear that.
That is terrible!

We were on COBRA for 3 months, under the American Reinvestment act when my wife got laid off from Hanes Brands. Supposedly jobs went overseas and Mexico. Oh, Don't buy Hanes!!
Uncle Sam paid about $400 of the $800 it was for 2 individuals. Ain't cheap!

All the best to you.

Best wishes.

Well February isn't too bad. The markets generally start opening up about then, with companies having made their plans for the next year and approving their 2011 budgets. The new hiring starts about then. As for health care, it is expensive everywhere. COBRA is a life saver and far less expensive than private insurance. I pay about $1200/mo for family and it's expeced to go up about 20% again the next renewal period. Being self employed has its benefits ... and its drawbacks too.
Laugh and the world laughs with you. Cry and you'll have  to blow your nose.

Gene, Sorry to read your post. I lost my job last May, but life goes on and a job does not define your identity. Our COBRA health insurance runs $2600 per month. Good luck with looking for a new position. Ezra
