Transferring analogue to digital - help

My daughter is doing an animation art project for school and her college portfolio. We need to add music to it and I have a tape of some stuff that would be very appropriate for her short clip.

So how can I transfer this from tape to a digital file cheaply and inexpensively? This is a one time shot, so I'm not looking to buy anything expensive to accomplish this task. Maybe some freeware and some Rat Shack adaptors?

You can use Audacity for the recording software. It is free and full featured. It will allow you to edit the soundtrack to fit the video. I think it may have video editing, or some basic video capabilities too? I can't remember as I have not used the video features but I seem to remember there was something.

If the tape player has any kind of line or speaker output, a simple 1/8 - 1/8" line can plug into the line in or mic input of your soundcard. Choose the input in Audacity and set the recording levels.

I think this is free video editing software. Looks like Audacity doesn't do video editing.

Thanks guys. I'll try that. If all else fails I still have my ART DI/O, which allows analogue to digital conversioin, but I've never actually tried it because I disabled that part of it long ago when I was doing the mods. Easy enough to put back together though if I need to.
