Stopped in at PREX prior to dropping Shadowlights speakers off and found some things on my 'must buy' list, both Lee Morgans & Blue Mitchell & Mulligan/Baker, and some other things that looked interesting. The Miles album was a replacement for a beat copy I had. Thought if I got into PREX early I could shop in peace and keep within budget, well budget part worked, but 2 NYAR members popped up and abused me. Damn New Yorkers!

Been working some crazy hours over the last couple of weeks so I haven't really had any time for shopping (or posting, or even listening   ) But Friday night I had to stop at the library on my way home from work to drop something off and just before I got there they put out a whole shelf full of (mostly) jazz CDs in the discard sale area for 50 cents each.  

Needless to say is wasn't a full shelf for long!

Kenny Burrell - K.B. Blues

This is an interesting one because it was never officially released in the US by Blue Note -- it was only issued in Japan.  The album is of particular interest to me because it features a great recording of The D.B. Blues, by Lester Young.  D.B. is short for detention barracks.

You just can't have a meaningul discussion about tenor sax players without Lester Young dominating the topic.  I prefer Young's original version, but Burrell does a damn fine job of honoring him.

Lester Young is the pinnacle of jazz sax, Bird's idol, in fact it was prez who named Parker yardbird for hanging around him all the time, like a yardbird pecking at your feet.  One of my mentors, drummer Alan Dawson, one of the greatest ever, listened to Prez heavy in his later years, and he had played with everyone. Prez is a mature style not easy to 'get' when you're young. But now we're all old enough here!   Some of his best playing is early years with Basie.
