Annual Cleaning

This is a good time of year to do that annual cleaning of interconnects, RCA jacks and speaker wire connections. But don't forget about your turntable bearing and lubrication, including the motor spindle.

Just cleaned and re-lubed mine and saw the oil in the bearing was way browner than the fresh oil (Mobile 1) I put in there last year.  I guess it saw some good use this past year.

Enjoy,
Bob

Thanks for the reminder Bob.

Remember that plastic potentiometers, like volume and tone controls don't like the Caig gold residue. They need a special Caig, or just use plain no residue spray cleaner.

A good demag CD and LP will clean up the sound as well. Usually once a month for me.
  Nothing like clean connections.

I did all of my physical connections last night, but neglected to do the demag routine. Thanks for the reminder.

While you are lubing up all the bearings on your TT don't forget to give the stylus a good scrubbing.

If the connections are not plated, regular Caig DeOxit D5 will work great and not leave a residue... it chemically dissolves corrosion while improving contacts & protecting the "cleaned" surface... good stuff...

I never had issues with Pro-Gold or DeOxit Gold, but I guess some have...

Lithium Grease. About $5 at most any hardware store.

No, but 16 oz should last you about 20 years even with your prodigious spinning habits.

Mike from the VPI Service Dept. recommended just a few drops of Slick 50 for the bearing on my HW-19 Mk II & IV bearings, but they are not inverted. I'm not sure if that would make a difference.

The inverted bearing needs white lithium grease, or something similar like the teflon grease mentioned before. Oil will not sit on that inverted bearing as it does in our more standard bearing wells, Tom.
