One night in NYC question

Hello NY'ers.  Hope all is well, I am asking for a favor here...
I've got a training session to do in NYC (midtown Manhattan) and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a cheap but clean place to stay for the night.
Most places I see are 250-300/night.. and more. If that's what it is, that's what it is... but thought I'd ask here.

The place I'm going is here:
500 8th Ave, New York, NY 10010
The training is during the day 10-6 for 2 days.

I'll be coming into town October 2nd staying the night and leaving the following evening, coming and going from JFK airport.  

Kind of a tight trip.. Help appreciated.

Back in the 80s there was a ratty hotel near Washington Square that I used to stay in for $60, single bed, basement room, the small window at sidewalk level, everything painted gloss brown. No sign of that place anymore.

The Holland Motor Lodge is in Jersey City, NJ.  It's a short PATH train trip to downtown Manhattan.  $155 for the night.

Older daughter and I stayed there several years ago.  It is a bit of a haul from there to JFK, but your training will intervene.

I might wait it out too.. there are often last minute deals to fill rooms for cheap.. I just wanted to stay close to where I needed to be.. since I'm only there for a couple of days.. 

I'm flying to Boston directly after the class Thursday.  That will be for pure fun with most of my best friends... and I absolutely cannot miss that.

A trapeze does sound ideal, DJ.  Especially if I were single... Who wouldn't come back to my place if I offered them a trapeze?

Having been in NYC for nearly 50 years, I don't think that 8th Ave area is a choice place for lodging.  500 8th Avenue I'm not sure what the cross street is, so I'm not confident of the local either.  IF it's in the Chelsea area (+ - 23rd St. cross street) would be a decent location (quietness).  Otherwise, the east side is usually a better area (east of 5th Ave.).  However, price I really have not idea.  I would say, for NYC, you'd be hard-pressed to pay less than perhaps $200 for anything decent. 

The trend now is that out-of-towners are more likely staying out of the hot touristic areas, like Times Square, simply for $$$.  Europeans, esp., more and more of them are staying in areas where there are different minorities.  Boisterous, perhaps crowded also, but people now tend to like different cultures.

I would recommend that you get hold of an AAA tour book; this way you will have a better idea of the rates.  If you're not an AAA member, have someone who is to get it.  AAA members, or senior citizens do get price breaks.

Pretty central... the air bnb thing sounds pretty smart.  I think I'm going to try that... I'll be the guinea pig! ha.

http://www.leohousenyc.org/  run by nuns, clean..... of course, not like a Marriott, but very decent, in the Chelsea area.  8th Avenue subway is right at 8th Ave./23rd St. (C or E train I think).

I brought up the topic with my siblings tonight, and AirBnB also came up.  Google it.
