Linn Dealers and technicians

Why is it every time I speak to a Linn dealer I start thinking:

yeah there's always this "You need to spend $400 hr to get some guy who know how to set up a Linn. No one else can do it"

Jesus Christ, it's 3 springs and some grommets and some oil in the bearing!! Then they want to sell you $3000 in upgrades!!

Complete turnoff.   Owned a LP12 w Ittok early in my audio journey.   Ditched it early on,  in part d/t the whole hocus pocus shamanism surrounding it.   I just can't abide by that kinda cult-like nonsense and blind devotion.

Besides,  my Townshend Rock mk3 just crushes it sonically!

Suggestions for replacement? (used market)

Jim, a couple years ago I bought a used Clearaudio Concept for $900 with a high end upgrade cartridge installed. 
It took a while for me to learn how to set it up, but it was my first audiophile TT.  Now I am very happy with it. If I got the itch for something even better, I'd probably stick with Clearaudio. But I'm also curious about Well Tempered Turntables, and Rega RP8.

Scott from SG Custom Sound wasn't able to help you in this endeavor? He helped with with my Thorens TD Mk125 a couple of years ago and it has been performing great since.

From doing a quick check on the net some people replaced their Linn SP12s with the Rega RP10 or ClearAudio Ovation TTs.

I also called Audio Breakthroughs in Manhassett for you as a member here spoke nicely about them before. Don't know if you called them but they have a guy who could do the repairs on your Linn but the parts could be an issue. They were curious how the springs and other stuff mentioned occurred with your Sp12.

I had called "a dealer in Manhattan" about some bearing oil and one thing led to another. The springs in my unit are 30 yrs old. Do they "go bad"? According to Linn they do. I can call Audio Breakthroughs this week. Thanks.

Yeah, springs go bad according to a Linn dealer who is looking to get you in to the store and hard sell you on upgrades that will most likely set you back more than you originally spent on the table.

I have to say that is one thing that that I have always liked about VPI. As many updates as have been available for the HW-19 series over the years they have never really "sold" them. They would basically just publish a price list of what was available and if you wanted one you just called them, or a VPI dealer. At times you even had to chase somebody down to find out exactly what one of the upgrades was and if it would in fact produce a noticeable difference given the setup that you had at the moment.

I personally have never owned a Linn, but pretty much every story I have heard about Linn owners talking to dealers involves a high pressure sales pitch to install every upgrade Linn has ever come out with or the world will end. Kind of reminds me of Microsoft and the push to get every user to buy and upgrade to the latest version of Excel, whether you need the new features or not.

There's a ton of used turntables that come up for sale all the time. People practaclly give away old VPI HW19's, and I can't figure out why. They are one of those great tables that just sound right.

The suspension in my LP12 gave out after about 25 years.  David at Accent on Music in Mt. Kisco is a Linn specialist.  Give him a call and tell him (or his wife Alma) that I recommended them to you.
