This tape sounds better than the lineage suggests, with much less hiss than you might expect. It was marked "Set II" but after Gimme A Rainbow Dave or Ed says "we got at least one more set to go." https://etreedb.org/lookup_show.php?shows_key=20767 shows two songs played before Mustang Sally and a Domino encore, and otherwise matches the setlist above.

There were bad tape flips in the middle of Straight Eight and another one during Hard to Handle. The latter, and the one in Lucinda have, happily, been made to vanish. Straight Eight still has a noticeable kink in it.

Bruce Barnum was a Deadhead and an avid taper from the early 1980's until his death in 2017 at age 48. Over the years, he taped dozens of Dead shows throughout the Northeast, as well as other concerts, some of which have not been heard since then. After his death, about 60 of his master cassettes turned up in a used record store in Hudson, NY, where some had been bought by random people nostalgic for the days of cassettes. The rest were purchased by a fellow Deadhead and archivist. Bruce's daughter, Jessica, had more, and was kind enough to lend them to be digitized. Many of these recordings sound excellent for their age. They are Bruce's legacy.

Ed Perlstein, who has archived collections by Nick Gravenites, Spencer Dryden, Steve Keyser (John Cipollina's manager) and others, and who currently possesses John Cipollina's personal tapes, was given the approval of John's sister, Antonia, to share John's live and studio outtake recordings in the interest of keeping his music alive for future generations. Steve Keyser, who recorded most of John's live shows with several different bands while he was his manager, has allowed Ed to digitize his master cassettes, and to share them with John's fans and collectors.

This has to be one of the best audience recordings from Jim's 1970 American tour but sadly it probably will never see the light of day as a Dagger release although in my humble opinion it should be strong candidate. A cracker of a concert from start to finish, it has spell binding versions of Red House and Hear My Train A Comin'. The version of Machine Gun here is an absolute killer. The more familiar version on the Band Of Gypsys album was just a rehearsal for this.

Notes

There are a couple of dropouts at the start of the show. These could be fixed but this is the raw, unedited source straight from the master reel. Details of how this show was rediscovered in 1996 are included in the booklet. The booklet features the only known colour photos from the show.

While countless rockers started their careers in the New York suburb of Long Island before going on to worldwide success (Billy Joel, Twisted Sister, Steve Vai, Brian Setzer, Blue Oyster Cult, etc.), there have been countless acts that appeared poised for a breakthrough, but for whatever reason, fell short. Many longtime followers of Long Island-based rock would probably agree that tops on the 'woulda/coulda/shoulda' list were the Good Rats, a group who played at some of the East Coast's best-known/biggest venues (Madison Square Garden, Nassau Coliseum, the Philadelphia Spectrum) during the '70s, while opening for such big names as Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, the Grateful Dead, Bruce Springsteen, Kiss, Journey, Heart, Styx, Meat Loaf, and Rush, among others.

Specializing in a tough form of bar band/hard rock (comparable to Led Zeppelin early on, before getting more commercial), quite a few band members have waltzed through the Good Rats' ranks since their formation during the late '60s, but through it all, lead vocalist Peppi Marchello has been present. Originally consisting of Marchello, drummer Joe Franco (later briefly a member of Twisted Sister), bassist/vocalist Lenny Kotke, plus a pair of guitarists/singers, John "The Cat" Gatto and Mickey Marchello. Debuting in 1969 with The Good Rats, a frustrating trend would soon follow for the group -- their albums would be well-received by their large, local fan base and regional radio, but would fail to connect to other parts of the continent.

It was the group's sophomore effort, 1974's "Tasty," that would spawn one of The Good Rats best-known songs: the jazzy title track, which remains a staple on Long Island-based classic rock radio. It was also around this time that the Good Rats caught the attention of guitarist Tommy Bolin (through a mutual friend), who was earning raves at the time due to his flashy guitar work for the likes of Billy Cobham and Deep Purple. Bolin was so impressed with the group that he had the management of one of his favorite clubs, Denver's Ebbets Field, hire the group, which resulted in a jam session with Bolin and drummer Carmine Appice on a rousing cover of Cobham's "Stratus," which would appear years later on the Bolin compilation Bottom Shelf (Bolin sadly died from a heroin overdose two years later). Although some groups would have quickly given up because of all the turbulence the Good Rats experienced, Marchello and company admirably continued to soldier ahead -- continuing to issue strong yet overlooked albums (1978's Rats to Riches and Birth Comes to Us All, 1979's Rat City in Blue, and 1981's Great American Music, the latter of which featured future Kiss guitarist Bruce Kulick).

After laying low for a few years, Peppi put together a whole new version of the Good Rats in the early '90s, featuring his son, guitarist Gene Marchello, who was a member of the short-lived-'80s pop-metal outfit, Marchello. After their rebirth, the Good Rats began issuing all-new studio albums, including 1996's Tasty Seconds and 2002's Play Dum. The original lineup of the Good Rats has been known to sporadically reunite for gigs, such as a pair of shows in Rochester, New York, in October of 1998, which saw the 'new' Good Rats open for the original Good Rats.

In June–July 1988, The American Soviet Peace Walk (ASPW) sponsored by the International Peace Walk, Inc. (IPW), organized and sponsored 230 Soviets citizens and 200 Americans from all walks of life. They started their travels from Washington, D.C. went on to Santa Monica, CA and continued on to San Francisco, to experience the America way of life. On July 16, 1988, the final concert was organized and produced by Summer of Love Productions Producers, Ron Frazier and Bill McCarthy, who had hosted the previous June concert event for the marchers in Los Angeles. On July 16, 1988, the American Soviet Peace Walk concert finale event happened at the Band Shell in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park with an estimated public attendance of 25,000 plus. The Producers give many thanks to all participants, the volunteers, and performing friends of the Summer of Love 20th Anniversary 1987 series that benefited the San Francisco Food Bank and ran through to the Concert of July 16, 1988. Congratulations are given to both the American and Soviet Performing Artists of the "American Soviet Peace Walk Concert". Participants and performances achieved the results as Change Makers that has advanced the cause for Peace and People-to-People Awareness. Artists' performances in concerts that achieve Global attention are needed as an ongoing effort to sustain awareness of and for Peace. Special Thanks go to; Susan Ramser, Producers Assistant who hosted the Soviet Artists on their arrival to San Francisco with the help of a Cadillac mini-fleet, Arthur Meyer, Artistic Director, and to Pete Sears of the original Jefferson Starship who assisted in the musical coordination and inviting cause-aware musician friends to participate. He organized the final musical portion of the show, as well as playing piano with each act. The Crowd was pleased by Mr. Jerry Garcia helped to promote the event, Pete Sears was responsible for Jerry's appearance. The Recreation and Parks Department prohibited advertising because they were concerned about fans camping and overcrowding, and so the concert happened without mainstream advertisement.
