The Stranglers IV

     LP

The Stranglers are an English punk/rock music group.

Scoring some 23 UK top 40 singles and 17 UK top 40 albums to date in a career spanning five decades, the Stranglers are the longest-surviving and most "continuously successful" band to have originated in the UK punk scene of the mid to late 1970s. Beginning life as the Guildford Stranglers on 11 September 1974 in Guildford, Surrey, they originally built a following within the mid-'70s pub rock scene. While their aggressive, no-compromise attitude identified them as one of the instigators of the UK punk rock scene that followed, their idiosyncratic approach rarely followed any single musical genre and the group went on to explore a variety of musical styles, from New Wave, art rock and gothic rock through to the sophisticated pop of some of their 1980s output.

They had major mainstream success with their single "Golden Brown". Their other hits include "No More Heroes", "Peaches", "Always the Sun" and "Skin Deep".

The Stranglers' early sound was driven by Jean-Jacques Burnel's melodic bass, but also gave prominence to Dave Greenfield's keyboards at a time when the instrument was seen as unfashionable. Their early music was also characterised by the growling vocals and sometimes misanthropic lyrics of both Jean-Jacques Burnel and Hugh Cornwell. Over time, their output gradually grew more refined and sophisticated. Summing up their contribution to popular music, critic Dave Thompson later wrote: "From bad-mannered yobs to purveyors of supreme pop delicacies, the group was responsible for music that may have been ugly and might have been crude – but it was never, ever boring."

Right "up your alley" Robin....smooth with a groove... 8)

Born and raised in Philadelphia, he however went on to university in Miami where he was discovered by Bob James. Although an excellent jazz man, he has crossed over into the mainstream and has toured with the Rolling Stones and Aretha Franklin amongst others. Andy Snitzer plays the saxophone in a plaintive, emotional tone that literally pulls at the strings of the listener's heart. He has the pathos of the late, great Michael Brecker, the gutsiness of Ernie Watts, and the uncanny human voice-quality of Wayne Shorter. Among a large group of new tenor saxophone players his voice stands out, and we all look for more great music from him.

I gave this album a listen and it's mighty laid back smooth jazz, something you don't want to listen to if you're a bit tired. While I do love Snitzer's sax play, the accompaniment has very basic stuff that didn't seem to change much from 1 song to the next. Very mundane album containing nonchallenging work imho. But still, I liked it and will sample Snitzer's other albums, none of which I currently have. Thanks for the suggestion Chris.  8)

Cheers,
Robin

Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quintet
Miles Davis Quintet | Format: flac

A mix between ballads, light swingers, and up-tempo bebop numbers, just the way the group bops on saxophonist Sonny Rollins' staple "Oleo" is worth the price of admission. Miles work on this number with the Harmon mute in place, trading solos with Coltrane, riding on top of Chambers' fast walking bass complimenting Philly Joe Jones' incomperable drumming, forced me to listen to this 3 times on the plane ride home last night.

And now starting the day off with it.

Minty New Jazz deep groove mono pressing.  This album features a rather interesting lineup of musicians...

Note the Alto Sax player.  "Zeke Tolin" is an anagram for Lee Konitz.  8)

Thanks to Jerome he's got me hooked on 45 RPM pressings! This recording has incredible dynamics & sonics... Horns sound like you are right there... maybe because they're voiced through horns!

Recorded LIVE at Blues Alley in D.C.... has the signature song... Stimela (The Coal Train)...

This is a serious audiophile recording at 45 RPM... probably best recorded LIVE album I've heard... the CD version is missing something sonically compared to the 45 RPM... however the CD version is still killer...
