This is a dull sounding RSO pressing from the late 70's to early 80's

As the cover scan of the box shows it is in rough shape.  There are seam splits on the lid and the box is starting to fray apart in a few spots.  However, the three RCA Shaded Dog mono LPs inside are in excellent shape.  And the Libretto is in the box as well, in mint condition, which makes this something of a rare find.  This, IMO, is the definitive recording of Carmen.  I know there are a lot of Maria Callas fans out there (and I am one of them) but I always preferred the mezzo soprano of Rise Stevens in this role.  Fritz Reiner does his usual superb job with the music and the orchestra.

This Nina Simone has the definitive version of  "Porgy" from Porgy and Bess.  I've heard dozens and dozens of versions of this, but this one really connects. If you don't have any Nina, I recommend this, her first effort.
