DFA - 4th



DFA is a modern progressive rock band from Italy with a hint of fusion in their sound. Their work is mostly instrumental, although there are vocals used on two tracks here with lyrics in Italian. If you're only a Rush/Dream Theater/Spocks Beard/Kansas style Prog fan, you may not care for this as much. Its all instrumental psych Prog jamming. If you dig King Crimson, Gong, Soft Machine, Pink Floyds longer jams, Hawkwind, Passport, Weather Report, Alan Holdsworth, I promise you'll love this. Definitely one of the best prog releases of 2008.

This is an awesome album. Nigel Kennedy has an ego almost as big as his playing. Pure confidence and perfect command of the ax. None of these violin waifs can exude the testosterone of this guy. Rattle directed this orchestra for many years before he moved on so they are extremely tight and they know how powerful he is and they react like a Ferrari. The recording is big and bold, not soft and and timid. Kinda like a Reference recording, but without the spacey mic effects. Recommended!

Picked this up at lunch time from J&R. Brand new release of big band backed tunes.

I can't vouch for the sonics other than it sounds good on the computer speakers in my office, but musically I'm likin' it.

Recently found this 1980's French band called Sixun. Hard to get their CD's at a reasonable price, but I managed a CD swap with another fellow in California. All I can say is that if you are a fan of Weather Report, or Tribal Tech, or many other world-fusion-jazz groups then you owe it to yourself to check out these guys.

I've heard the following albums and can recommend them.

I bought this for Lt Kije, by far the best version I have ever heard. I loved it so much I bought every other version to make sure I had the best, none matched this.

Tonigt I heard a lame Peter and the Wolf on the radio and switched to the DAC to play my own, with Sean Connery.

All in all, it's a great record!

Love this record. This might be Mulligan's best solos. Long intricate, building idea on idea, total genius. Then follows Desmond, playing at his peak. If you like very intricate harmonically rich melodic bebop lines that go on forever check this out.  The baritone fills the whole room, very well recorded.

My dad got me onto Mulligan and Brubeck when I was very young, but I don't think he ever heard this one so I just bought him a copy on vinyl for his Crosley.

"Pfrancing" was named for his first wife, Frances (Taylor) Davis, pictured on the album cover. She's on the cover of E.S.P. also.

I got the Mulligan LP yesterday from Amazon seller. It arrived in a totally crushed Fedex box, as if it was run over by the truck. No other wrap or padding on the records inside, just tossed into an oversized weak cardboard box. Nice! 
Fortunately the record is totally unscathed. Even the jacket is fine. After a good scrubbing it plays clean and quiet.

The highs are rolled off compared to the CD, and less resolution. Bari doesn't have the knock-you-down impact as the CD. But it's very smooth and relaxing, groovy. My Dad will love it!
