KCRW Presents: TOKiMONSTA

"June 18, 2013Los Angeles producer Jennifer Lee (a.k.a. TOKiMONSTA) has toured with Skrillex and Diplo and collaborated with Flying Lotus. She recently brought an assortment of gear to KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic studio for a live performance of her song "Go With It," with guest vocalist and labelmate MNDR."

This is a great version of The Planets. Great performance, ballsy, unafraid, good tempi, perfect musicianship.  Sound is great too, definitely audiophile quality. Almost like a Reference Recording.

I always love Bernstein/NYP's version of Jupiter, but this is better as a whole work.

The new reissue made by Phil Schaap is the new standard issue CD from Sony.  Sony doesn't sell the old famous version anymore.

MOFI has a audiophile pressing of the original LP (studio) version. As far as I can tell, so far, there is no vinyl available of the Schaap reissue.

I like Duran Duran, they were the best pop band of the 80s by far. I hocked my copy of 'Rio' long ago.    There is a new UK vinyl reissue from 2009 supposed to be good.

This "Arena" LP is from live concerts, with LeBon making up new melodies by ear. The energy and music is OK, but nothing like the studio versions on Rio.

Very beat up original mono LP with scratches skips pops. Well loved from my father's collection. It was so dirty I could see the 1st coat of washing suds turn brownish.

Original 1954 mono, quiet and clean, thanks to RobS' super record washer machine.  

This was Brubeck's first recording for George Avakian at Columbia. It also has one of the first modal chord tunes, "Le Souk" recorded 4 years before Miles tried it on Milestones, and later Kind of Blue. 

"The Song Is You" contains Desmond's best recorded solo, imo.

A soft pop record, with way too much reverb on the trumpet. Some interesting moments, nothing risky. Some nice tunes and arrangements. Nice late niter.

1973 mono pressing of a compilation from 1940-47.

A compilation of very important recordings in the history of jazz. HUGE hits from WW2 era. The beginning of jazz for listening, not just dancing. Early roots of bebop in these early pieces, but then the later recording of actual bebop arrangements are corny compared to later Eckstine and Callaway stuff, but Krupa's enormous appeal to the youth and his emphasis on showing off the finest virtuoso soloists  opened the doors to bebop going viral in mainsteam a few years later. Got this when I was 12, still gives me chills!

Anita O'Day and Roy Eldridge are the featured soloists.
