Toni Tennile: More Than You Know

Varese Sarabande CD

Yes, that Toni Tennile (less the Captain), tries her hand at the American Songbook.

This one was actually rather well recorded although I think the orchestration is a bit overdone and gets a little overbearing at times. Very dynamic and in your face like a big Vegas show. Kind of like the Nelson Riddle Orchestra on steriods. Might be OK for a live event but on a recording it just overshadows the singer too much.

The Weavers: Reunion at Carnegie Hall - Part 2

I found this like new condition LP at the Crack House last week. I have had the original Weavers at Carnegie Hall album for many years in  both original and Audiophile releases. And I have to say that the vinyl on this album is as quiet as any of the "premium" versions that I have heard over the ears.

Arthur Fiedler and The Boston Pops Orchestra: Fiedler In Rags

Polydor LP

A fun Boston Pops performance, but as in most cases the sound on the Polydor releases is not up to the standard set by the RCA Living Stereo series. While  it is fairly clean there is no sense of the hall whatsoever. Sounds like it was recorded in a lifeless studio instead of the concert hall sound you get on most of the RCAs.

Enjoyable for casual listening, but not a sit down audiophile type of album.

Grover Washington Jr: Soulful Strut

Here is an example of an album that just doesn't know what it wants to be. It is part retro 60s intrumental, part smooth jazz and part urban rap.  It has some good music in it but ther3e is just no flow or theme to the album. It just seems like a bunch of tracks that they had leftover from other projects and threw together to make a CD. (I have no information that this is the case, it's just a feeling that I get.

I may return to this to listen to individual tracks from time to time, but this is not a CD that I will sit down and listen to as an album from end to end.
