Billy Joel: Turnstiles

  Mobile Fidelity Half Speed Mastered LP

Something about the sound on this one is just not right to my ear. The instruments are hands down better than the CD in terms of detail and space, but the vocal track seems dryer and a bit flat as compared to the CD. It also just seems a bit off spatially to me, like it was recorded in a different space than the rest of the band, which very well may have been how it was done and this better pressing only now made that apparent.

Listened to these last two Billy Joel albums to decide whether or not I wanted to spring for the new MoFi 45 RPM pressings, and the answer was that the CBS Half speeds give me credible audiophile sound and while the 45s might be somewhat better, for as much as I play them the ones I already have are good enough. If I didn't have them at all the 45s would be getting more serious consideration, but seeing as I have already invested in decent audiophile vinyl of these albums, I think I will stay put on this one.
