It's unbelievable how cheap older classical discs - especially box sets - have gotten. $40 for 11 discs in the above example. I don't like remembering what I paid for many of them.

Chesky Records SACD Hybrid

As one would expect from a Chesky SACD this has ver nice sound, but tend to wander a bit too much into the 20th century modern symphonic realm for my taste. Some parts are very nice and then others start to get very atonal, which is just not my thing. But it was a clearance bin find, and priced that way, so no big loss.

I found it kind of strange that although they identify the conductor and the soloists, nowhere on the case or in the booklet did I find any mention of who the orchestra is (perhaps they are just a bunch of studio musicians brought together for this recording and not a formal orchestra per se.)

John Williams Conducts Music from Star Wars  - The Boston Pops

Decca 2 CD Set

This newly released set does not contain any newly recorded material, but rather is  just a compilation  of previously released music, not doubt put out there to capitalize on the release of the latest Star wars movie. I don't know if it was just poor mastering or if the original recordings were tweaked for play on iPods and phones, but the whole thing just sounds flat and restricted in space. The original soundtrack albums were much better.

At least this was just a library loan.....
