Audiosnobs turn their noses up at Phase 4 recordings.  Key instruments were mic'ed hot to emphasize solos rather than a more natural sound.  But I admit that I kind of like them in some recordings. 
This is one of my favorite versions of an old standard...

Thanks, Scott. You come up with a lot of interesting information. As to why the engineers hot mic'd recordings, I accept artistic freedom and go with the flow. I just want it to be recorded reasonably well.
