#1443
Beethoven: The Ninth Symphony, Philadelphia Orch. Ormandy, Mormon Tabernacle Choir

Saw this at the Crack House and thought "The Morman Tabernacle Choir doing Beethoven's 9th? This has potential...."  :-k

Well potential was all that is had. This has got to be one of the worst sounding classical recordings I have heard in a long time. It is closed in, dead sounding, , cluttered... think od a word that describes bad sound and it will probably somehow apply to this record.   ](*,) I only paid 53 cents for it and I still feel like I got taken (maybe I could use it for a coaster.... )

Run, do not walk away from this one.

That's a great one. Tchaikovski Violin Concerto is standard of all standards for violinists. It was thought to be unplayable when it was first published. Fischer plays it technically perfect and powerful, but not the most graceful version ever.

There are some chamber pieces (violin and piano) on that record that are awesome!!! Great demo pieces for the stereo.

I downloaded this one from HD Tracks this afternoon.  With mom here until Thursday (due to the snow) and having to go to Vera's Mom's yesterday the system has had no work since last Friday.  Nothing but Classical all day and all I can say is I feel like I have a whole new world of music to enjoy.  Thanks guys for starting me on this journey.

Pentatone is a great label too, with consistent audiophile quality and some great artists, mostly based in Eastern Europe.

Brahm Violin Concerto is another warhorse, I like it better than Tchaikovsky. Rachel Barton Pine is the best Brahms I've ever heard. In fact I think I'll play it right now....

This is a nice one from Reference Recordings. It won a grammy a few years back for best classical recording. Respighi is one of my fav composers.

Rich, if you liked that one you should really check out the Reference Recordings release of Respighi's "Church Windows". I have never heard the CD (I am sure it is no slouch), but I can tell you that the 45 RPM vinyl pressing is absolutely breathtaking. Keith Johnson was a man who was way ahead of his time. He was making 45 RPM LPs in the 1980s long before it was the "in" thing to do.

OK, now you and Ken have thrown down the gauntlet. I am going to have to start combing through my Reference Recordings archives.

That's one of the great things about this thread. It often either enlightens you to a new source of good music or ignites a spark tat brings you back to some of those gems of the past that you haven't visited in a long time.  :thumb:

Yes, the thread does keep us talking about music. Thanks to Lonewolf for starting this thread, he knows the music is the most important thing.

I love everything Respighi, so I will definitely check that out Tom, thanks. He and Prokofiev are the two composers that I would like to have everything they did.
