There is something about this album that just doesn't sit right with me.

He was very sick by then. He lived a very hard life.

As it seems did a lot of the jazz greats. Don't get me wrong It is not a bad album and as a matter of fact if Mobley's name wasn't on it I probably would have had no big issue with it. But it was just kind of sterile and missing that magic spark found in his Blue Note releases. Probably more a reflection of the direction Jazz was taking in the 70s vs the 50s than it was a reflection on Mobely himself or the state of his health. (it was also an Atlanitic release and not done by the team at Blue Note.)

Al Jarreau: Heaven and Earth

CD

A bit to commercial and overproduced for my taste. (YMMV)

Kenny Burrell

Prestige/OJC D

Did you like this? I just cleaned my copy in prep to listen to for 1st time, and company from MA. pulled in my drive, so I've not listened to anything for last few days. Kenny is sitting next to tt staring at me in a very judging manner, I don't like it.  :(

MFSL 45RPM 180g vinyl.  My favorite Patricia Barber album.

I didn't realize that MoFi was issuing 45 RPM pressings. Is this their first one?

They have issued a few 45s Tom, but not many.  I think there are three titles in their catalog at the moment.  It isn't something that I bother to track as I don't buy much from MoFi in the first place.

Great album, but given the amount of time that Miles spent fighting substance abuse problems I thought it was in rather poor taste to put out a CD with a cover picture that looks like he is smoking crack. (I realize that this was the original cover, but given the problems he had in later life I for one would not be upset if the changed the cover photo in future releases of this album.)

I think you're being a little over-sensitive.  Art and music are products of their time.  Miles Davis was a heavy cigarette smoker and he would often light up while other musicians were taking their solos during a performance.

I would rather not see art and music revised in any way, and that includes art and music that I might not personally approve of.  It just opens up a huge can of censorship worms that has no place in a free society.

Agreed!

Plus, just about every old BN/Prestige/Verve album cover from that period has someone smoking, it's just the way it was at the time.

And many of these others also had substance abuse issues.

I agree about the smoking and would not have thought twice if it clearly looked like a cigarette me was smoking. But with the way the photo was lit it looked like he was lighting a crack pipe even if it was really a cigarette. And I in no way am advocating that the picture should be changed or censored. I was just surprised they chose a picture like that in the first place, that's all.

Now that I think about it, it also may be a time lag thing. 1) the date of the album release may have predated Mile's drug problem and 2) the photo may have also predated the introduction on Crack (or at least the popularity of it) so at the time it was taken nobody would have had the gut reaction I had to it.

As usual, you guys are waiting in the wings to keep me on my toes.  :thumb:
