The Best Of Wishbone Ash.......German vinyl

Settling in for a long TG weekend of listening.

One of the earliest commercial digital recordings. 14 bit recording on Sony F1 system.

Glenn Gould at his very best.

richidoo

Great for night listening. Laid back and smooth. Excellent SQ.

richidoo

Smart fusiony jazz, acoustic, dissonant, odd times, but smartly, not proudly or spitefully. Tuba and bass sounds huge, tuba growly. Lots of contrast, tonally, tempo, brass vs percussion and vibes. No piano. Very good drummer, doesn't struggle with the odd time signs.

A cool record, I guess it's jazz because of the instrumentation and sophisticated compositions and arrangements, odd beats... but it's definitely not straight ahead.

Cooler than snarky puppy, humbler than Todd sickafoose, production is not slick like those, it is all acoustic, live session with real improv solos.

richidoo

Very big powerful sound, not bass shy, cello and piano duets. Great recording. Lots of cello testosterone here, and she keeps up on piano.

On a Prokofiev roll tonight. Finally have speakers that can handle it!

Elgar Enigma Variations

This version is supposed to be one of the best. I first heard Enigma as background music on final episode of (British) Top Gear last season. Love at first hearing.

Barry Manilow - My Dream Duets

 Verve CD

I saw this in the library and thought , "For free it's worth a shot." Turned out to be an interesting album. It could also be titled "Barry sings with dead people." On each track the vocal was separated from a was famous performance using ADX Technology and then inserted into a newly recorded orchestration and vocal with Barry. Some tracks came out better than others, but overall it turned out to be interesting musically and not to shabby on a SQ level.

Of particular interest to us audiofools is track 8, where he did a duet of The Look of Love with Dusty Springfield. Most of us are very familiar with the original recording of this song from the Casino Royale soundtrack and it is interesting to here what they did with it.  (Dusty's vocal had a bit more reverb on it that it did in the original release. I suspect that is either an artifact of the separation process or put there to mask some imprefections of in the process.

The Decca Eloquence series was released in Australia, but can be found as an import here in the states for reasonable price. Nicely done reissues of classic performances from the Decca vaults.

I have a number of the releases the did of Amsermet/Swiss Romamnde recordings and have yet to be disappointed by any of them. Definitely a series worth checking out.
