Hank Mobley ‎– A Slice Of The Top

I bought a lot of Mobley and McLean over a year ago, listened once and put away, they didn't 'grab' me, maybe cuz not as familiar to my ear as Miles/Morgan/Coltrane/Adderly etc. Dusting them off and playing again, and enjoying them quite a bit. More so Mobley then McLean so far, but that could change.

This an interesting outing, an octet with tuba and euphonium, a 'fuller' sound.

The Freddie Redd stuff with McLean are pretty good.

I like Mobley's earlier stuff like with Blakey and Morgan "At the Jazz Corner of the World" (2 volumes,) and Mobley's own "No Room for Squares," and with Dorham on the Horace Silver and Jazz Messengers album. If you don't like those then Mobley just isn't your thing. Like me with Dexter, it just never happened.

Triode Pete

Music Matters Blue Note Reissue on vinyl...

Much better listening to music than foolish debating on topologies...

Thanks Rich for another pointer. I never heard of Redd, looked his work up, (not much), and added 2 things to my buy list, Freddie Redd quartet, and especially Shades of Redd. I have 'No Room for Squares'.

And I'm not saying I don't like McLean, just didn't warm to it at first listen. I'll be playing more over next few days.

No Dex huh? I love him, especially the early '60's work on BN, like Pete's 'GO'.

Jackie McLean ‎– Capuchin Swing

One of Jackie McLean's more underrated albums from a plethora of Blue Note releases, 1960's Capuchin Swing finds the bebop alto saxophonist in fine form on a mix of covers and originals.

Eschewing ballads, McLean focuses on mid- to fast-tempo swingers and blues. Standouts include originals like "Francisco" and "Condition Blue" and choice renditions of "Just for Now" and "Don't Blame Me."

That record spun a million times a day in my house, my little brother grew up on it, he's a Jackie freak.

No Dex for me. It's personal. But I don't like his playing anyway. I'm pretty picky jazz listener, probably from being a jazz player.

Ahhhhhh..., another piece of the puzzle falls into place.

Hank Mobley ‎– The Turnaround

Hank's turn again.

And Capuchin Swing was quite good.

Billy Joel: Live at Shea Stadium - The Concert

Sony 2 CD, 1 DVD Set

My wife Meredith had the first of her reconstructive foot surgeries last Thursday and has been in quite a lot of pain since. The only relief she seems to get is when the Percosets knock her out. So I have been trying to be a nice guy and keeping the stereo shut off so as not to wake her. Lately the only music I have gotten to listen to has been in the car as I run out to do errands.  :(

But sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do...........
