Whistle Stop

While pulling all my Bill Evans out of boxes in the basement, I took my house off the market, I grabbed this.

Since I didn't really recognize it, I just put it on after 2 Bill Evans Trio LPs, and the mood changed quickly, this album swings!

Per my notes, Rich sent it to me, THANKS RICH!

I haven't heard it yet either. I started to listen to Undercurrent but my wife wanted to watch Hallmark, so I had to kill it.    sigh...

I fell in love with Kenny Drew from listening to Kenny Dorham's Whistle Stop. That's a REALLY great one, do you have that? If not, let me get it for you!

Great album, just pulled out my Acoustic Sounds 45 RPM Pressing.

My favorite string quartet album. This is what got me into hifi in 2005, close to as good as it gets, imo...   :-P

Found it in the on line library catalog. Should be in by the end of the week.  :thumb:

You are right Rich, this one is a keeper.  8)

Great album, just pulled out my Acoustic Sounds 45 RPM Pressing.

Showoff!  :-P  But you got me to listen to it on Tidal MQA 24/192  :thumb:

You're welcome Gene. I thought you'd like that. Some of KDs best post bop work, imo.

Tromboner from Maria Schneider Orchestra, the best I've ever heard. Faster than Curtis Fuller and a lot more to say. Better tone than Frank Rosolino. Higher range than Al Grey. Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound and catch a freight train in his teeth.

Great modern harmony arrangements, real jazz. Audiophile quality recording.

Also older Quartet CD: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B000981A3O

Both are on Tidal.

This is the first truly hi-rez album of Clifford Brown that I have seen. On Tidal, MQA 24/96.

And it actually sounds like a real high res mastering! Lots of trumpet tone texture that I've never heard before, including on my original 70s pressed LPs of these tracks. Dynamic range is dramatically better than my vinyl. That's nice to have with Art Blakey on drums, and Brownie on trumpet! The remastered bass is not excessive, it is informed and respectful of the bebop genre. This is an excellent mastering job.

This recording has Brownie just back from Europe with Lionel Hampton Big Band. He is a new star in America due to the release of Art Blakey "Night at Birdland" while he was away. No Larue, no Max. This recording has his friend Gigi Gryce just like his Paris sextet recording, but it takes it up a notch with Blakey and a premier NY rhythm section. Rouse would later become Monk's front man.

Several of these Kenny Dorham hit albums are on Tidal MQA 192k.

Afro Cuban
Whistle Stop
Trompetta Toccata
Una Mas

Rich, what DAC are you using to get the MQA decoded all the way out to 24/192?

I am using the Bluesound Node to decode the MQA files which since it is using software MQA decoding puts out a Max resoulution of 24/96, which is very good in and of itself. To get anything higher than that I would need to pass the raw MQA file directly to a DAC with built in hardware MQA circuitry.
