Just got my copy of Art Blakey "Night at Birdland" Vol2 w/ Horace Silver, Clifford Brown, Lou Donaldson, and Curly Russell.
So many giants playing together in a club. What a trip it would have been to be able to hear that in person.  Even listening to the mono LP is pretty darn good.

A friend mentioned that he had a Blue Note stereo copy, which sent me to Google to do some research.  "A Night at Birdland" was recorded in Feb. 1954, way before Blue Note was doing stereo recordings.  Rudy van Gelder (chief engineer) didn't even own a two track deck until 1957... so some the early stereo releases from the late 50's and early 60's that were re-releases of popular mono recordings were based off of the one track master tapes.   They were some sort of signal manipulation.  So if looking at early Blue Notes, be aware that stereo releases of performances before '57 may not be what you think they are.

Worth a listen if you can find it for free on a streaming service, but I heard nothing that would have compelled me to lay out cash for it.

It was on this day in 2012 that Dave Brubeck passed away, just 1 day shy of his 92nd birthday. That means tomorrow will be the 100th anniversary of his birth.

In memory of the man that brought Jazz into the mainstream it is time for a memorial spin of the album that pretty much kicked that off.
