Joni Mitchell A Woman of Heart and Mind is an older documentary (2003) that I just watched.
Her music was always an outpouring of her personal feelings, set to unique chord progressions and other worldly vocals.  The documentary put much of her career in a focus that clarified so much of her work.  I pulled out "Blue" and "Mingus" to re-examine.
Such a generational talent.

The clarity and timbre of her voice is what really defines her incredible talent.  Couple that with the unique guitar sound from the various tunings and her ability to really tell a tale and you have a songstress that will forever go unmatched.

Her tonality is unique.  If I put Joni on the turntable, my wife Rene'e is gone by the second song.  Her voice can be piercing- Joni's not Rene'e's.

Joni Mitchell's name has been familiar to me for decades, but I knew nothing of her personal and professional struggles... It's interesting also how she had a vision to blend the simplicity of the crooners styles with the storytelling of someone like Dylan and create her own poetic, musical style.

A little more information about her..

I used to date a gal who was addicted to Joni when she still lived at home, and played her incessantly.  Her mother would scream out "turn off that wretched caterwauling!".   I'm with the Mom on this one.

So I'd beat your wife to the door by several minutes!

For some, Joni Mitchell's high soprano is like extended listening to an aluminum dome tweeter.
Not for me.  When in the mood, I can play her albums back, to back, to back.

I'm with your wife on most Joni- I do enjoy several of her tunes however. There's no denying she's great, just not everyone's cup of tea. The people I find most annoying are those that don't like a particular artist/band and proceed to tell you why they are just no good.  :duh
