Hey Jerome???

What's the SQ like on those Westminster disks?

I see them at the crack house and usually pass on them 'cuz I know nothing about them.

Argh! One more thing I think I have in a box somewherethat I now have to go look for.

Well, tomorrow maybe, having a scotch and grooving on Donald Byrd at the moment.

Gene,

I see Westminster as a second tier label.  They did not have recording contracts with very many big name conductors and orchestras.  So in my view the performances are hit or miss.  The Tchaikovsky 5th that I just spun today was inspired.  The Tchaikovsky 4th that was led by the same conductor for Westminster was absolutely horrid, and I have heard high school orchestras that could fare better with the material.

What Westminster does consistently bring to the table is sound quality.  They duplicated the single mic technique that was employed by Mercury on the Living Presence records that they did mostly with Antal Dorati and the Minnesota Orchestra.  If you like that sound then you will find the SQ of a typical Westminster record agreeable.

They definitely are worth checking out so long as you understand that you may encounter a performance here and there that doesn't measure up.

Gene, thanks for the recco on the Blue mitchell. I never heard that one, but the band looks sweet

at the Jazz Corner of the World, Vol. 1 on LP. w/ Lee, Hank, Timmons.  The music is awesome, some of the best of the Messengers catalog. Sound quality is not great. Pan tricks, and Lee had to stuff his mike up into the trumpet to be heard over Blakey so his tone is shit, but the energy is blistering.

not to be confused with "Meet you at the jazz corner..."    which came a couple years later, with Wayne.

Ant Trip Ceremony ~ 24 Hours

Released in 1968 by a group of Oberlin College students and pressed in very limited numbers (i.e. 500 copies), 24 Hours is a blend of folk, blues, jazz and eastern psychedelia. Songs on the album explode with originality, with meditative pieces like Pale Shades Of Gray and it's eerily beautiful melody or Elaborations, a lengthy raga-ish instrumental with some very effective flute. Just one look at the tripped out psychedelic cover is enough to guarantee that the music contained within the confines of this album is a mind blowing artifact of the 60's counterculture.

Art ~ Supernatural Fairy Tales  1967

Supernatural Fairy Tales is the only LP by Art, a re-named band formerly known as The V.I.P.'s. The album contains mostly band compositions plus a cover of The Young Rascals' "Come on Up" and Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth".

All members of Art sooner or later met again in Spooky Tooth.
