Which is not all that surprising when you think about it. He was 23 years old without a lot of professional experience under his belt so he emulated the sound of someone that he admired who was already successful. Once he got a bit more experience (and confidence) under his belt he was able to break out and develop or of his own style. You also have to wonder how much of the Wes sound came from  producers try to copy a sound that they knew was already popular in order to help bolster sales for a relatively unknown new artist.

Hank Mobley: Straight No Filter

Blue Note CD

This album is perplexing in how much it spotlights other musicians and how little it spotlights Mobley. If I didn't see his name on the cover I would have just thought he was a session player and this was somebody else's album. Still a good album, just strange in how little it features the headliner.

jsaliga

It's one of the last really good Blue Note albums that Alfred Lion produced, having sold the label to Liberty Records in 1965 and by 1967 he was retired.

By 1970 most of what was coming out of Blue Note sounded a lot like music made for cheesy television shows.
